Cancellations and Postponements

American Bar Association - List of meetings and events that have been canceled or postponed are posted here.

Association of Corporate Counsel, Tennessee Chapter - The group is canceling all statewide events and committee meetings through April 30, 2020.

Belmont University College of Law - In lieu of in-person graduation, the college will honor its graduates on May 2, 2020, via a special online celebration that also will include the granting of scholarships and awards.

Executive Office for Immigration Review - All non-detained hearings, including merits hearings, are postponed through April 10. Detained cases will be heard as scheduled. Immigration courts in a number of locations, including Memphis, Louisville and Atlanta, are closed through April 10, 2020.

Hamilton County Juvenile Court - The following programs and meetings in March have been canceled: Youth Court, Recovery Court, child support clinics, the court commission meeting, Serious Habitual Offender Community Action Program meeting, and Foster Care Review Board meeting (April 7, 2020). Chattanoogan.com has more.

Law School Admission Council - The council has canceled the March 30, 2020, LSAT. The April 25, 2020, test is currently scheduled to proceed as planned but the council will monitor the situation and make a determination about that test by April 10, 2020. The ABA Journal reports on the decision. The council has canceled the April 2020 LSAT but is now offering a May 2020 exam that students will be able to take at home, Above the Law reports.

Lawyers' Association for Women, Marion Griffin Chapter - The group's Membership Meeting scheduled for March 17, 2020, has been canceled.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee - LAET is open for business as usual with minor adjustments to ensure safety. Applications for service may be made by calling the closest LAET office or by completing an online application. In-person intake and client meetings are being limited to emergencies only. LAET is exploring options for holding virtual clinics but in the meantime has canceled all legal clinics through May 13, 2020.

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands - The group has canceled legal clinics scheduled for March 21, 2020, at the Metro Nashville Public Schools building and for April 1 at the Downtown Nashville Public Library. Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law - The school conferred degrees on May 7, 2020, in an online ceremony but is allowing graduates to participate in a future in-person ceremony for the next two years.

Knoxville Bar Association - The KBA has canceled its Law Practice Today Expo originally scheduled for April 2-3, 2020, at the UT Conference Center. KBA reports the decision was necessary because the University of Tennessee has canceled all events at the center between March 16 and April 5, 2020. The KBA has postponed its Law Day event, originally scheduled for May 1 to Aug. 19, 2020. On Dec. 14, 2020, the KBA closed its offices until further notice due to an increase in COVID cases.

Memphis Area Legal Service - The March 21, 2020, legal clinic at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library has been canceled.

Memphis Bar Association - The MBA has postponed all live scheduled CLEs through mid-April (with the exception of the Family Law CLE on March 18, 2020). The association has also decided to reschedule its Bench Bar Conference for Oct. 1-4, 2020. All hotel rooms booked through the MBA room block will be canceled. Nashville Bar Association - The NBA has canceled several meetings and postponed others. Get details here. On March 26, 2020, the NBA announced a new date for its Law Day celebration now set for July 10, 2020. The Spring Memorial Service that was slated for May 21, 2020, has been canceled.

National Bar Association - The association announced in an email on March 11,2020, that it will postpone its 40th Mid-Year Conference, originally scheduled for March 19-21, 2020 in Atlanta. Read the message from the association. The association announced on March 20, 2020, that it has postponed its 2020 International Affiliates’ Meeting to spring 2021.

National Conference of Bar Examiners - The group says it is monitoring COVID-19 developments and is in close contact with local jurisdictions about how the July 2020 bar exam may be impacted. It says it will make a decision about the MBE, MEE and MPT by May 5, 2020. It has developed a webpage to share updates.

National Legal Aid & Defender Association - The American Bar Association and NLADA plan to reschedule the Equal Justice Conference, originally set for May 6-9, 2020. Because they are exploring rescheduling the conference, they ask that attendees hold off on requesting a refund. Updates will be posted on the Equal Justice Conference website. Nashville Public Library - The library is postponing all programs between March 16 through April 16, 2020. This includes the program with U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Senior Judge Martha Craig Daughtrey originally scheduled on March 30, 2020. The library says it will reschedule the event.

Nashville School of Law - The school has postponed its 2020 graduation ceremony until Aug. 29, 2020. The school has also canceled its Annual Recognition Dinner, originally scheduled for June 5, 2020. The 2021 event will take place June 11, 2021.

Tennessee Alliance for Faith & Justice - The group’s 2020 Tennessee Faith & Justice Summit will be held online on April 21, 2020, rather than in person as originally scheduled. Watch for more details. Download a flyer about the virtual summit.

Tennessee Bar Foundation - The foundation has canceled its Annual Fellows' Dinner, scheduled for April 3, 2020. Fellows who have made reservations will receive a refund. Those who reserved a hotel room through the foundation's room block, rooms will be automatically canceled with no penalty. To reinstate the reservation call 629-208-8383.

Tennessee Human Rights Commission - The commission has canceled its Knoxville Area Employment Law Seminar originally scheduled for March 19, 2020. Read the notice.

Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women - The group has rescheduled its "Empowerment Conference: From Suffrage to Success" for Aug. 20-21, 2020. It was originally scheduled to take place on April 23-24, 2020. Questions should be directed to Executive Director Karol Lahrman.

Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation - The bureau has postponed its Workers’ Compensation Educational Conference, which was scheduled for June 10-12, 2020, in Murfreesboro. The bureau says it is polling constituents to gauge interest in a rescheduled event later this year.

12th Judicial District Bar - The group has rescheduled its dinner with Alberto Gonzalez to Nov. 6, 2020, at 7 p.m. ET.  Those who already have paid for tickets should keep those tickets for the November date. To purchase tickets, mail a check/money order/cashier’s check to Nicole Rogers at P.O. Box 511, Jasper, TN 37347. The group has rescheduled the event to Nov. 6, 2020. The bar association has canceled this event.

University of Memphis School of Law - The school will hold a virtual commencement on May 9, 2020. The school also has set up a Law Student Emergency Fund to help students who are struggling due to the pandemic.

University of Tennessee College of Law - A virtual graduation celebration will take place May 7-9, 2020.

Vanderbilt University Law School - The school has postponed commencement for 2020 graduates to May 2021.

Closures

Chattanooga Bar Association - The CBA has closed its physical offices through March 31, 2020. Staff are working remotely.

First Judicial District - District Attorney General Kenneth Baldwin announced on March 13, 2020, that all criminal and child support offices in the First District are closed to the public effective immediately. Attorneys should call the office at 423-753-5020 for assistance.

Georgia State Bar - Per the recommendations from Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, the State Bar of Georgia announced March 13, 2020, its offices will be closed through March 31, 2020.

Knoxville Bar Association - The KBA had reopened its offices but will close them again on Dec. 14, 2020, until further notice due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the area.

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & The Cumberlands - The agency announced that it has closed its physical offices and staff are working remotely.

Nashville Bar Association - The association has closed its physical offices through March 31, 2020.

Nashville Metropolitan Trustee's Office - Extends closure and announces tax relief. Read more on News Break.com.

Shelby County Law Library - Closed until further notice.

Shelby County Register of Deeds Office - The office is temporarily closed to the public. Customers can continue to mail filings or electronically file records online. For customers who generally come to the office, a secure document drop-off slot is available beginning March 24, 2020, from 9-11 a.m. and  2-4 p.m.

Tennessee State Capitol - As of March 16, 2020, the Capitol and Cordell Hull Building are closed to everyone except legislators, legislative staff and the news media. The ban includes lobbyists.

Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office - The Nashville office will close its third floor walk-up counter for business services on March 16, 2020, until further notice. Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) - A project of the Nashville Arts & Business Council, which announced March 19, 2020, that will operate remotely through at least March 27, 2020, with all services ongoing. Stay tuned for announcements in the coming weeks about new services to help the Nashville creative community. West Tennessee Legal Services - The agency announced it has closed its physical offices and staff are working remotely for the next 30 days. Instructions for those seeking to apply for services or check on the status of their case are posted online.
