Attorneys from Caterpillar Financial Services Corp. and Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz were honored Saturday (March 1) during the Eighth Annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Gala in Nashville. The event raises money to support pro bono activities across the state and recognizes the law firm and corporate legal department that best represent an extraordinary commitment to access to justice ideals and pro bono service. Hewlett Packard Deputy General Counsel Bruce Ives gave the keynote address at the program, which also featured comments from Chief Justice Gary R. Wade, (CCPBI) Co-Chairs Andy Branham and Jim Barry, TBA Access to Justice Committee Chair Alex MacKay, Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services Executive Director Ann Pruitt and TBA President Cindy Wyrick. Baker Donelson was recognized for two project undertaken by its Knoxville office in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee. The firm volunteered to serve as a Pillar Law Firm, representing people seeking to obtain a conservatorship over a disabled adult. In addition, Baker Donelson worked with LAET to help bring “Project H.E.L.P.” to Knoxville. This project provides legal assistance to homeless men, women and children seeking shelter at the Knoxville Area Rescue Mission. Caterpillar Financial Services was recognized for its ongoing partnership with Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors, which offers immigration legal services, education and advocacy. Specifically, JFON has been instrumental in helping young undocumented Tennesseans apply for protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
