Each year the Tennessee Bar Association recognizes outstanding service by attorneys and law students who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to increasing access to justice for underserved individuals and communities in Tennessee.

Awards are presented in three categories:

  • Ashley T. Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year - recognizes an attorney for an indigent client in either civil or criminal defense who has provided dedicated and outstanding services.
  • Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year Award - recognizes significant pro bono work by an attorney in private practice or corporate setting.
  • Law Student Volunteer Award - recognizes a student or recent graduate who has provided dedicated and outstanding pro bono services during law school.

2024 Public Service Awards

The TBA’s Access to Justice Committee has recognized Memphis-based Assistant Federal Public Defender Tyrone Paylor as the Ashley Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year, Memphis attorney John Golwen as the Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year and University of Tennessee law student Kim Riddett as Law Student Volunteer of the Year.

The awards recognize outstanding service by attorneys and law students who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to increasing access to justice for underserved individuals and communities in Tennessee.
