Pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 37.1, the Supreme Court may suspend the law license of an attorney who is in default on a repayment or service obligation under any federal family education loan program, a student loan guaranteed or administered by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC), or any other state or federal educational loan or service-conditional scholarship program. The Supreme Court received notice from TSAC of a list of attorneys who had failed to comply with their obligations under a state or federal educational loan or service-conditional scholarship program guaranteed or administered by TSAC.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has issued a number of orders suspending Tennessee-licensed attorneys who have not paid their 2015 annual registration fee to the Board of Professional Responsibility and/or have not filed a mandatory compliance statement that eligible client funds are held in accounts participating in the Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program. Those names appear first. The court also has issued separate orders for those attorneys who filed their IOLTA report but did not pay their fee, and those attorneys who paid their fee but did not file the IOLTA report.

Suspensions: CLE Suspensions

The following attorneys were suspended by the Supreme Court on Aug. 25, 2014, for failing to comply with Rule 21 of the Rules of the Tennessee Supreme Court, which requires mandatory continuing legal education, for the 2013 compliance year. Attorneys who have since complied with CLE requirements, and for whom notice has been received from the court, are noted as reinstated.

On Jan. 1, 2012, the Tennessee Supreme Court adopted amendments to Rule 9, Sections 20.1, 20.2 and 20.8. The amendments included a new requirement that lawyers assuming inactive-status must pay an annual inactive-status fee to the Board of Professional Responsibility. Pursuant to the rule, the fee is due on or before the first day of each attorney’s birth month of each year. Attorneys who have since complied with fee requirements, and for whom notice has been received from the court, are noted as reinstated.

The following attorneys were suspended by the Tennessee Supreme Court on Nov. 29, 2012, for failing to pay the state professional privilege tax as required by Tennessee Code Annotated 67-4-1702. Pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 32, attorneys who fail to pay the fee for at least two consecutive years, are summarily suspended. Attorneys who have since complied with the requirements, and for whom notice has been received from the court, are noted as reinstated.
