Paper on Supreme Court wetlands case wins annual contest

NASHVILLE, April 23, 2013 — Wyatt Sassman, a third-year student at Vanderbilt University Law School, has been awarded first place in the Tennessee Bar Association Environmental Law Section’s 2013 Jon E. Hastings Memorial Award Writing Competition for his article “Administrative Compliance Orders and Due Process after Sackett.” He will collect a cash award of $1,200 and his article will be published in an upcoming issue of the section’s newsletter.

Student Court Will Hear Peers’ Truancy and Disorderly Conduct Cases

NASHVILLE, April 15, 2013 -- The Academy of Law at Cane Ridge High School is launching a youth court program, the Cane Ridge Restorative Court, in collaboration with the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA), Metropolitan Nashville Juvenile Court, Metro-Student Attendance Center (M-SAC), and the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Student Services department. The installation ceremony for student court members will be Tuesday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Cane Ridge High School auditorium.

Survey shows TBA members support current judicial selection system by 83 percent

NASHVILLE, March 26, 2013 — Eighty-three percent of Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) members support maintaining the present plan for merit selection, performance evaluation and retention election of appellate judges, known as The Tennessee Plan, according to the TBA 2013 Member Survey. Non-member lawyers also surveyed by the group favor the present plan, but by a slightly smaller margin of 72.3 percent.

School will represent Tennessee at national competition in May

NASHVILLE, March 19, 2013 -- The Kingsport Area Christian Home Education Association (KACHEA) team claimed the state high school mock trial championship title this past weekend, defeating Montgomery Bell Academy of Nashville. The team now will represent Tennessee at the National High School Mock Trial Competition in Indianapolis, Ind., May 9-11.

NASHVILLE, Jan. 25, 2013 -- Nashville lawyer Jean Crowe was honored as the state's top public service attorney by the Tennessee Bar Association at a luncheon on Saturday. Held each year as part of the association's Leadership Conference, the luncheon featured award winners in several categories and a keynote address by Deborah Taylor Tate, a Tennessee lawyer and former commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission.
