Ending Daylight Saving Time: the Science and the Opportunity for Advocacy

Changing our clocks for Daylight Saving Time is a ritual that many Americans view as outdated, and would like to end. Join us as we explore the science and advocacy related to this practice. Joanna McCracken will interview Dr. Beth Malow, director of the Vanderbilt Sleep Division, who has testified on the health aspects related to changing our clocks, and also spearheaded legislation in our Tennessee state legislature to end Daylight Saving Time, on how the human body responds to these changes.
Faculty Bios:
DR. BETH MALOW holds the Burry Endowed Chair in Cognitive Childhood Development, is Professor and Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and is Director of the Vanderbilt Sleep Division. Throughout her career, Dr. Malow has worked with the public and policy makers to advance science and public health in a variety of areas. She has advocated successfully for later school start times for middle and high school students, and testified to a US Congressional Committee on the health benefits of ending Daylight Saving Time. She has written position statements for sleep societies and opinion pieces for the public on ending the clock change, and appeared in multiple media outlets including CBS News, PBS Newshour, and NPR 1A. This year, she spearheaded bills in our Tennessee State Legislature advocating for year-round Standard Time, testified before several legislative committees, and organized grassroots efforts.
JOANNA MCCRACKEN is an attorney, meditation teacher, and yoga instructor. She is one of the two managing partners of McCracken Kuhn PLLC, a Nashville law firm that focuses on family law. McCracken is the founder of Mind Your Business, an organization that teaches lawyers, firms, and other legal groups how to use meditation, mindfulness, and yoga techniques to overcome occupational stress and create healthier working environments. She gives wellbeing presentations at CLE conferences, legal seminars and law schools. It is her knowledge and practice of meditation, mindfulness, and yoga that has enabled her, not only to manage the high demands of her professional and personal lives, but to appreciate, enjoy, and thrive in each area. McCracken is the current Chair of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Attorney Well Being Committee and is on the board of the Mindfulness in Law Society.
