May is National Treatment Court Month and a great time to make plans to attend the TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) upcoming Drug Court 101 webcast. This information-packed foundational CLE will introduce Tennessee's recovery courts, historically known as "drug courts." The program will cover recovery court practices, Tennessee's Drug Court Treatment Act, the target population appropriate for participation, valuable brain/addiction science, best practices for dealing with participants with substance use disorder(s), and the challenges and successes of the drug court model. The webcast is meant to provide attorneys with valuable information to assist in effectively representing clients and is open to all lawyers — particularly criminal defense attorneys, prosecutors, juvenile and family law attorneys and general civil practioners.

The CLE will be moderated by TBA YLD President and Circuit Judge Alex McVeagh, who formerly presided over the misdemeanor track of Hamilton County Recovery Court. He will be joined by the Director of Hamilton County's Accountability Courts Shannon Morgan, who is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with over 20 years of experience working in substance use treatment and drug recovery courts. Both have provided trainings in the past for drug court practitioners across the country through All Rise (formerly the National Association of Drug Court Professionals). For more information and to register visit the TBA website.
