The Battle for Equality is Sometimes Fought in Inches

As part of this issue’s spotlight on women in the profession, cover story authors Jackie B. Dixon and Psonya C. Hackett conducted interviews with several Tennessee lawyers whose daughters followed in their footsteps. The women interviewed graduated from law school and were admitted to practice between 1976 and 2022 — a span of 46 years. As we weave their stories together, one thing is clearly gleaned from the experiences and wisdom of these women: Tennessee’s women lawyers are still fighting to move toward equality, even if the move is in inches. Our sincere thanks to Margaret Behm and Margaret Dodson, Tasha Blakney and Caroline Rogers, Linda Knight and Katherine Knight, Marlene Moses and Marissa Russ, and Helen Rogers and Stella Mallinak for their assistance with this article.

TBA Public Service Award Nominations Deadline Next Week

There is still time to submit a nomination for TBA’s Public Service Awards. The annual awards recognize outstanding commitment to access to justice in three categories: work performed by an attorney employed by an organization primarily involved in providing legal representation to the indigent; pro bono work performed by a private or corporate attorney; and a strong commitment to pro bono service by a Tennessee law student or recent graduate. Nominators are welcome to include supplemental information including letters or brief videos of support. Nominations close March 15 and awards will be presented at the 2023 TBA Public Service Brunch on April 15 in Nashville. For more information, contact TBA Director of Access to Justice Liz Todaro.
