The following attorneys were suspended by the Tennessee Supreme Court on March 15, 2021, for failing to pay the state professional privilege tax pursuant to Tennessee Code Annotated 67-4-1702. Pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 26, attorneys who are deemed noncompliant for 90 days or more are summarily suspended. Those who since have complied with the rule are noted as reinstated.

Pursuant to Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 10.5 and Rule 43, Section 14, the following attorneys have been suspended in 2021 for failure to timely pay their annual registration fees and/or submit certification that all eligible funds are held in an IOLTA account. The annual registration fee is due and payable to the Board of Professional Responsibility on or before the first day of the attorney’s birth month of each year. Attorneys who have since complied with the requirements, and for whom notices have been received from the court, will be noted as reinstated.

The following attorneys were suspended by the Supreme Court on Aug. 18, 2020, for failing to comply with Rule 21 of the Rules of the Tennessee Supreme Court, which requires mandatory continuing legal education, during the 2019 compliance year. Attorneys who have since complied with CLE requirements, and for whom notice has been received from the court, are noted as reinstated.

A number of lawyers have been reinstated after having been suspended for not completing required CLE hours in 2019 (15 lawyers), 2018 (7 lawyers), 2017 (three lawyers), 2016 (three lawyers), 2011 (one lawyer), 2009 (one lawyer), 2008 (one lawyer), 2007 (two lawyers) and 2006 (one lawyer). Pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 9, Section 26, attorneys who are deemed noncompliant for 90 days or more are summarily suspended. Those who since have complied with the rule are noted as reinstated.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has issued a number of orders suspending Tennessee-licensed attorneys who have not paid their 2018 annual registration fee to the Board of Professional Responsibility and/or have not filed a mandatory compliance statement that eligible client funds are held in accounts participating in the Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program. The court also has issued orders for those attorneys who filed their IOLTA report but did not pay their fee, and those attorneys who paid their fee but did not file the IOLTA report.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has suspended the following attorneys for failure to pay the annual inactive license fee. On Jan. 1, 2012, the court adopted amendments to Rule 9, Sections 20.1, 20.2 and 20.8. The amendments included a new requirement that lawyers assuming inactive-status must pay an annual inactive-status fee to the Board of Professional Responsibility. Pursuant to the rule, the fee is due on or before the first day of each attorney’s birth month of each year.
