Knoxville event is part of series examining civility in today's society

NASHVILLE, Feb. 11, 2013 -- Gov. Bill Haslam will be joined by former governors Phil Bredesen and Don Sundquist to headline a public forum on civility and effective governance Feb. 21 in Knoxville. The event, sponsored by the Tennessee Bar Association, the University of Tennessee Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the University of Tennessee College of Law and the First Amendment Center, will take place in the Toyota Auditorium of the Baker Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It is the final of three forums looking at issues of civility and free expression across the state.

Award presented to Jean Crowe at luncheon ceremony

NASHVILLE, Jan. 25, 2013 -- Nashville lawyer Jean Crowe was honored as the state's top public service attorney by the Tennessee Bar Association at a luncheon on Saturday. Held each year as part of the association's Leadership Conference, the luncheon featured award winners in several categories and a keynote address by Deborah Taylor Tate, a Tennessee lawyer and former commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission.

Team of four recognized for work on Juana Villegas case

NASHVILLE, Jan. 25, 2013 -- Four Nashville lawyers were honored with the state's top pro bono award for their work protecting the civil rights of Juana Villegas, a jailed immigrant who was shackled to a bed while in labor. The team was recognized by the Tennessee Bar Association at a luncheon Saturday that featured award winners in several categories and a keynote address by Deborah Taylor Tate, a Tennessee lawyer and former commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission.

Offices and lawyers honored at luncheon ceremony in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Jan. 25, 2013 -- The Tennessee Bar Association on Saturday recognized 12 law firms in the state for adopting over the past year formal pro bono policies calling on employees to do more for Tennesseans who cannot afford legal representation. They join 50 other firms and corporate legal offices that have adopted such policies.

Award presented to Dale Hedges at Nashville ceremony

NASHVILLE, Jan. 25, 2013 -- Dale Hedges of Clinton has been named the 2013 CASA Volunteer of the Year by the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (YLD). The award recognizes Hedges' 18 years of service as a volunteer for CASA of the Tennessee Heartland, which serves children in Anderson, Blount and Scott counties.

Awards presented to volunteer lawyers at winter meeting in Nashville

34 lawyers from across the state join six-month leadership training program

NASHVILLE, Dec. 10, 2012 -- The Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) announces that 34 attorneys from across the state have been selected for its 2013 Leadership Law program. Now in its 10th year, Leadership Law is designed to equip Tennessee lawyers with the vision, knowledge and skills necessary to serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. The class will meet for its first session in January, and then spend the next six months learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service.

Tennessee lawyers to offer free legal services across the state in October

NASHVILLE, Sept. 27, 2012 — Tennessee lawyers will offer free legal services to those unable to afford a lawyer throughout the month of October as part of the national Celebrate Pro Bono initiative. Activities will include legal advice clinics, education programs, public presentations and other events. The initiative kicks off with four legal clinics on Oct. 2, with more than 40 events planned across the state during the month.

Panelists named; time changed to include presidential debate watch party

NASHVILLE, Sept. 25, 2012 -- A public forum on the tensions between free speech and civility will take place in Nashville on Oct. 16. The event, sponsored by the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA), the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University and Lipscomb University, will take place in Lipscomb's Ezell Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and free parking is available in front of the Ezell Center as well as in the P2 garage (view parking map). Following the program, attendees are invited to stay and watch the second presidential debate scheduled for that night beginning at 8 p.m. Central.
