Three doctors from Siloam Health yesterday sued the Tennessee Department of Health over its decision to report the names of critically ill undocumented children to immigration enforcement entities if they remain in the program past June 30. The doctors are represented by the Tennessee Justice Center, the Nashville Banner reports. Later in the day, Davidson County Chancellor Pat Moskal granted a temporary restraining order and set a temporary injunction hearing for July 2. At the beginning of June, the department sent letters to about 400 immigrant families enrolled in the state’s Children’s Special Services program letting them know about the change. The department argues the move is needed to comply with a new state law, now codified in Public Chapter 1106. Advocates for the program called on Gov. Bill Lee to intervene in the issue earlier this week.

Free Legal Answers has surpassed 500,000 total questions responded to, marking a major milestone for the virtual pro bono platform that launched in 2016, according to a release from the American Bar Association (ABA). Currently, 42 states and territories offer live access and 17,700 volunteer attorneys have provided more than 100,000 hours of pro bono service. A federal portal also is available to address veterans' benefits and immigration questions. The ABA Journal also reports on the milestone.

Jonathan Cole and Buck Lewis, both shareholders with Baker Donelson — which maintains the platform in collaboration with the ABA — praised the achievement in a release. “Free Legal Answers really makes a difference,” Nashville-based Cole, chair of the ABA House of Delegates, said. “Passing 500,000 questions answered demonstrates the depth and scope of this initiative to address the access to justice gap across our country.” Memphis-based Lewis, founder of Free Legal Answers, added: “We can all be proud of what has been achieved through this collaboration between Baker Donelson, the ABA and our many state partners.” Lewis also touted the firm’s role in recently rewriting the code so the platform can serve the next 500,000 clients “even more quickly.”

Lashanta Rudd, who had planned to run a write-in campaign in the Democratic primary for Tennessee House District 93, has withdrawn from that race, according to the Commercial Appeal. Rudd, a future Shelby County commissioner, is founder and CEO of Serving in Christ Outreach Ministry. She was being investigated by the City of Memphis for alleged misuse of grant funds. According to documents obtained by the Commercial Appeal, the nonprofit used funds to buy a car, get an oil change and complete residential renovations. The city confirmed the investigation and said the audit resulted in her being banned from future grants. Rudd still is set to join the county commission. She won the Democratic primary in May and is unopposed in the Aug. 6 general election.

The U.S. Supreme Court and a federal district court in California ruled recently on a number of Trump administration immigration policies. The Supreme Court today allowed the government to terminate temporary legal protections for thousands of Haitians and Syrians. The court also today ruled that the government may legally turn back asylum seekers before they physically enter the country. The policy, called metering, began under former President Barack Obama but officially was rescinded by the Biden administration in 2021. In addition, earlier this week, the court made it easier this week for the government to remove green card holders who commit crimes. SCOTUSblog reports on these three decisions. In addition, a federal judge in California has issued a nationwide ban on the arrest of immigrants going to and from immigration hearings at courthouses. Reuters has more on that ruling.

The Tennessee Bar Foundation has announced the induction of its newest fellows, a distinguished group of attorneys and judges being recognized for exceptional contributions to the legal profession and the public good. The group of 28 join Tennessee Supreme Court justices, state and federal judges, and practitioners in diverse legal fields who have demonstrated a commitment to improving their communities and upholding the integrity of the legal profession. This honor is extended to a select few, representing less than 5% of licensed attorneys in the state. "We are incredibly proud to welcome the Class of 2026 into the distinguished ranks of our Fellows. Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell has named Jaz Boon, a member of Sherrard Roe Voigt & Harbison, as the new chair of Nashville Electric Service’s board, according to the Nashville Post. Boon will succeed Vanderbilt University Law School’s Anne Davis, who is stepping down after five years. Boon focuses his litigation practice on counseling clients on business disputes, commercial matters and environmental health and safety compliance. He previously was assistant general counsel for Bridgestone Americas, Inc. The news comes after a comprehensive independent review of NES’ response to January’s Winter Storm Fern was released this week. The review, commissioned by the NES board, was led by Bill Harbison of Sherrard Roe Voigt & Harbison and Aubrey Harwell of Adams & Reese, according to WSMV. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will host a free webinar on June 30 at 9 a.m. CDT about obtaining and using Tennessee resale certificates. Participants will learn the proper procedures for obtaining and using Tennessee resale certificates, including required documentation, appropriate use and common compliance issues. The Houston Bar Association and University of Houston Law Center are hosting a virtual CLE program regarding the status of ABA accreditation of law schools. The program, which is being held June 29 from 2-5 p.m. CDT, will begin with an update from law school deans in five states, including Tennessee. Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law Dean Matthew R. Lyon will address recent developments. “A Conversation on the Accreditation of Law Schools” also will include an institutional perspective on ABA law school accreditation with representatives from the Association of American Law Schools, National Association for Law Placement Foundation and ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee has given official notice that it intends to appeal dismissal of its case against Kilmar Abrego García, the Nashville Banner reports. In a ruling last month, U.S. District Court Judge Waverly Crenshaw found that the government engaged in selective and vindictive prosecution when it pursued human smuggling charges tied to a November 2022 traffic stop. Crenshaw found that had Abrego García not successfully challenged his deportation to El Salvador, the government would not have filed the criminal charges. The appeal will be filed with the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. The government still is seeking to deport Abrego García.

Memphis attorney and theater producer Adam Remsen extended his winning streak on Jeopardy! to nine consecutive games today, increasing his total winnings to $192,805, the Commercial Appeal reports. Remsen earned $24,401 in his latest victory after correctly answering the final clue in the category "Opera Characters." The run puts him in front of the last local long-run champ, Laura Faddah, who won eight games in late 2024/early 2025.
