The TBA’s 2024 Convention gets underway Wednesday with a meeting of the TBA House of Delegates, training for new section chairs and a welcome reception for all attendees. Pre-registration for the event is now closed but those still interested in attending may register on site at TBA Registration, which will be located in Grand Ballroom Salon C on the Mezzanine Level of the Peabody Hotel,  beginning at 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday. Those unable to attend this year’s convention in person are invited to join us for a livestream of the annual Lawyers Luncheon at noon CDT Friday on TBA’s Facebook page. Watch as President Jim Barry closes out his year of leadership, Tennessee lawyers are recognized for their contributions to the profession and TBA President-elect Ed Lanquist Jr. is sworn into office. Join your colleagues in Memphis June 12-15 for the TBA's Annual Convention, the largest annual gathering of the Tennessee legal community. This year’s convention theme “A Bridge to the Future” reflects the historic role lawyers play in society, while looking ahead to how technology will affect the legal profession for years to come. Online registration for the TBA's Annual Convention closes at 11:59 p.m. CDT on June 9. Only on-site registrations will be accepted after that point. There are a limited number of hotel rooms available in the room block.

Nashville Public Radio reporter and producer Meribah Knight will receive the TBA’s Fourth Estate Award for her podcast series “The Kids of Rutherford County,” which brought to light abuses in the juvenile court system in Rutherford County. The award, which was established to recognize and encourage journalists who promote public understanding of the rule of law and improvements in our system of justice through their vigorous exercise of their First Amendment rights, will be presented at the TBA Annual Convention in Memphis on June 14 during the Lawyers Luncheon. The TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) has selected Kandiss Brown as its 2024 CASA Volunteer of the Year. During the four years that Brown has volunteered with CASA of Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County, she has won praise as a dedicated volunteer who never hesitates to take on a new case, regardless of its level of complexity. "Mrs. Brown conducts each investigation in a professional manner without letting emotions overcome her judgement," CASA Executive Director Michelle Childs said in her nomination of Brown. The CASA Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented at the YLD Board’s annual dinner on June 14 in Memphis as part of the TBA’s Annual Convention. Read more in the TBA's press release.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) will host a CLE during next month's TBA Convention focused on the expanded use of technology and virtual work that has become the new normal. Panelists will discuss challenges that attorneys, law firms and other practitioners face in maximizing their familiarity and skills outside traditional office and courtroom proceedings and into the “virtual office” with remote hearings and trials and fully virtual client relationships. Moderated by TBA YLD President Quinton Thompson, the program will take place June 14 from 10-11:30 a.m. CDT in the Venetian Room of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. The upcoming TBA Convention offers eight hours of CLE programming, including Friday’s session on “Preventing Attorney Burnout.” Sponsored by the TBA's Attorney Well Being Committee, the program will feature retired Judge Robert "Butch" Childers, now with Childers Mediation and Arbitration Services, and Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program Executive Director Buddy Stockwell — two seasoned lawyers with extensive experience and knowledge in the field of attorney well-being. The discussion will be moderated by Chase Pittman with the Kardia Collective, a Memphis-based counseling company. Learn more about this program or other CLEs being offered at this year's convention.
