The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold three clinics next week. A phone clinic will be held on Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. CDT to provide general advice. The first 15 callers will be accepted. On Oct. 20, LAS will hold a clinic specifically for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. Finally, on Oct. 23 at 8:30 a.m. CDT, a general advice clinic will be held at the Belmont Clinic, 2005 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37204. The Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands and the Tennessee Faith & Justice Alliance are seeking attorney and law student volunteers for a virtual naturalization clinic on Oct. 23. Shifts are available from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. CDT. A mandatory virtual training will be held on Oct. 19 at 1 pm CDT. Sign up for a volunteer slot.

The Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, Knoxville Bar Association and its Access to Justice Committee, Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the University of Tennessee College of Law will hold a Faith & Justice Alliance Advice Clinic on Oct. 23 at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. The Memphis Bar Association is partnering with Vanderbilt Law School to host a Tennessee Free Legal Answer "Clear the Queue" event on Oct. 22 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. CDT. Volunteer attorneys will answer questions about qualifying civil legal issues from the Free Legal Answers queue. To volunteer, please contact Danielle Woods.

The Belmont College of Law’s Legal Aid Society is hosting a fundraising event to support its efforts to help law students provide pro bono assistance in the state. The group reports that former U.S. attorney general and current law school dean Alberto Gonzalez has agreed to participate in a “Pie a Professor” event if the society raises $10,000 for summer legal aid stipends. Gonzalez also has agreed to challenge Vanderbilt University Law School Dean Chris Guthrie to the same arrangement. Nashville lawyer and former TBA President Gail Vaughn Ashworth will receive the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section’s Edmund S. Muskie Pro Bono Service Award this week at the section’s fall meeting. The award recognizes section members who demonstrate a commitment to justice and dedication to pro bono service. Ashworth is a member of the section’s council, mentor for its leadership programs and past chair of its Medicine and Law Committee. She is a founding member of Wiseman Ashworth Law Group PLC where she handles personal injury, insurance coverage, employment law and medical ethics. Ashworth was TBA president in 2009-2010.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee, in partnership with McNabb Center, YWCA of Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley and the Knoxville Family Justice Center, will hold a free legal advice clinic for victims of domestic violence on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon EDT. The clinic will be held at the Knoxville Family Justice Center, 400 Harriet Tubman St., Knoxville 37915. Masks will be required and social distancing observed. Knoxville area legal organizations will hold an in-person veterans’ legal advice clinic this Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. Those seeking advice should preregister at 865-637-0484. Lawyers who would like to volunteer can sign up online. Masks are required. Volunteers also must accept the terms of the KBA COVID-19 safety acknowledgement and liability waiver. Volunteers may choose to continue volunteering by telephone.

West Tennessee Legal Services (WTLS) and the Administrative Office of the Courts are partnering to provide training and volunteer opportunities as part of Celebrate Pro Bono Month. An estate planning training will be held virtually Oct. 12 at noon CDT. Nashville attorney Jeff Mobley from Howard Mobley Hayes & Gontarek will present an overview of wills and estate planning, a pro bono area in increasingly high demand. WTLS will also host an estate planning clinic and needs volunteer attorneys to remotely review documents with clients on Oct. 21 and 22. For more information or to volunteer contact Andy Cole.
