The Memphis Bar Association will hold its Second Saturday Legal Clinic on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon CDT at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111.  Volunteers should arrive by 9:30 a.m. for instructions. Sign up here to volunteer.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee, in partnership with Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, the TBA Young Lawyers Division, the Tennessee Supreme Court's Justice for All Initiative and Belmont University College of Law, will hold a Virtual Debt Relief Clinic on Oct. 28 from 9-11 a.m. EDT. (This is a correction from previous announcements that shared an incorrect date.) Those in need of legal advice about debt relief should call 423-794-2496 to register. A link to join the Zoom clinic will be sent following registration. Attorneys who would like to volunteer for the clinic should email Kendra Cheek.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the Kingsport Bar Association will host their monthly Kingsport Bar Clinic on Oct. 19 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. EDT at VO Dobbins Community Center, 301 Louis St., Kingsport 37660. The clinic is open to the public, offering general legal advice on civil matters, including housing, property, taxes, estate, contracts and family law. Attorney volunteers should email shuff@laet.org for more information.

Teams of pro bono attorneys, paralegals and law students in Nashville and Jackson, Mississippi, will compete in the 2nd Annual Capital City Pro Bono Challenge to see which city handles the most expungement cases at designated clinics. Four law firms with offices in both cities, Adams & Reese, Baker Donelson, Bradley and Butler Snow, are joining forces with volunteers from corporate legal departments, law schools and legal aid providers. The first Nashville clinic will be held Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon CDT at 154 Rep. John Lewis Way, North. The event is hosted in partnership with Legal Aid Society of Nashville & Middle Tennessee, The Contributor and the Office of the Metro Nashville Criminal Court Clerk.

The Tennessee Supreme Court and the Access to Justice Commission are hosting a free CLE and pro bono recognition event Oct. 10 at Belmont School of Law. TBA and ATJ Committee Chair Linda Seely will present Tackling Difficult Pro Bono Questions. The session will take place from 4-5:15 p.m. CDT, immediately before the recognition ceremony. Participants are invited to stay for both events. The recognition event will start at 5:30 p.m. Members of the Tennessee Supreme Court will be on hand to honor pro bono recognition recipients. Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht will serve as the keynote speaker. Light refreshments will immediately follow the presentations. RSVPs are requested.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee is co-hosting a Name Change Filing Party on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT at Edney Innovation Center in Chattanooga. The community event is presented in partnership with the Chattanooga Trans Liberation Collective where clients from the Virtual Pro Se Name Change Clinic can receive free notary and printing services, be matched with emotional support volunteers and apply for filing fee scholarships. Legal Aid of East Tennessee's (LAET) Chattanooga office will host an attorney workday for expungement cases on Oct. 11 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. EDT at their office at 100 W. Martin Luther King Blvd., Suite 402, 37402. This is a non-client facing clinic where attorney volunteers can work together to evaluate cases and fill out paperwork for expungements. Volunteers are requested for a Williamson County expungement clinic to be held Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. CDT at Franklin First United Methodist Church, 120 Aldersgate Way, 37069. At this event, pre-registered participants will have the opportunity to expunge their Williamson County records, including eligible convictions. Judges will be onsite to hear motions for fee waivers that may be a barrier to expungement. Walk-in clients are welcome, only to meet with volunteer attorneys. The event is a partnership of Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands, the TBA Young Lawyers Division, the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission, Franklin Justice & Equity Coalition, the 21st Judicial District Public Defenders and the Urban League of Middle Tennessee. The Arts & Business Council (ABC) of Greater Nashville is sponsoring a program exploring legal issues for documentary filmmakers this month and will host its pro bono legal clinic for artists on Nov. 1. The educational program for documentary filmmakers will be held Oct. 17 and will feature entertainment lawyer William L. Whitacre. ABC's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) Nashville clinic will include free legal consultations via 30-minute private meetings. Learn more or register.
