The TBA Litigation Law Section will host a roundtable discussion tomorrow, featuring panelists who will provide present-day insights of judicial independence in the shadows of our separation-of-powers history. In the Shadow of History: Separation of Powers and Tennessee Courts will take place on May 26 from 3 until 4 p.m. CDT. Todd Presnell of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings will moderate a panel that will include Nashville School of Law Dean William C. Koch Jr., University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law professor Steven J. Mulroy and former Tennessee Supreme Court Justice and University of Tennessee College of Law professor Penny J. White. The roundtable is free and open to the public, with optional CLE credit for a fee of $45.

The TBA’s Family Law Section will host an Alimony Bench Book Roundtable on May 17 from 11 a.m. until noon CDT. The event will cover all 2021 updates and changes to the 19th edition of the publication. Speakers will include the book’s authors: Judge Mary Wagner, Kurt Myers, Amy Amundsen and Siew-Ling Shea. The roundtable is free and available to all TBA members. You can purchase the bench book or access it for free as a Family Law Section member

The TBA’s Tax Law Section will host Tax Law CLE Series 2021: Update on CARES Act, PPP Round 2, ERC, and Other Abbreviations We Hoped We Would Never Need on May 12 from noon until 1 p.m. CDT. Get current updates on issues regarding the tax related COVID-19 relief measures currently in place. The 19th Edition of the Alimony Bench Book is now available. Published by the TBA’s Family Law Section, the book provides a ready source for dealing with alimony cases in Tennessee. Current Family Law Section members can access their copy at no cost on the Family Law eCommunity page, but must be logged into their TBA account. Others may purchase an electronic or hard copy version of the book from the TBA Store.

Join the TBA Animal Law Section on April 27 from 11 a.m. to noon CDT for a roundtable discussion on the discovery and rescue of neglected, suffering animals and the often complex legal consequences of those lifesaving efforts. Learn about recent rescues in Carroll and Putnam counties and the protracted legal battles that followed, including issues related to forensic evidence and cost-of-care laws. Nationally recognized animal law practioner Bruce Wagman and Animal Rescue Corps Executive Director Tim Woodward will headline this free event. One hour of CLE credit is available on request for a fee of $45 for TBA members. An optional 30-minute Q&A will follow the webcast.

The TBA’s Disability Law Section will host a virtual roundtable-style CLE program on April 23 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Moderated by section executive council member Chris George of the firm George & George, the program will feature Chief Administrative Law Judge Paul M. Stimson and Hearing Office Director Terry Angle from the Memphis Office of Hearings Operations. They will discuss best practices and technological updates for social security disability hearings during the pandemic. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions throughout the panel and time will be allotted near the end of the session for questions about general daily practice. The TBA Appellate Practice Section will host a free roundtable discussion on April 12 from 11 a.m. to noon CDT to look at the state of diversity in appellate practice. The program will feature Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Camille McMullen, Tennessee Solicitor General Andree Blumstein, and Juvaria Khan, founder and executive director of The Appellate Project. Will Perry with Butler Snow will moderate the discussion. One hour of CLE credit is available on request for a fee of $45. An optional Q&A will follow the webinar.

The TBA LGBT Section will host a roundtable videoconference this Wednesday. The event will feature ethics considerations for attorneys working from home, an open discussion of issues affecting LGBT lawyers and staying sane in a pandemic. The event is free and open to all TBA members but registration is required. Connection info will be sent following registration.
