The TBA Administrative Law Section is accepting submissions for its annual writing competition for law students. All students enrolled in a Tennessee law school during the 2023–2024 school year are eligible to enter. Submissions are due March 27. The section offers this yearly competition to promote an interest in and understanding of both state and federal administrative law, and to strengthen the relationship among administrative law professors, law students and practitioners in Tennessee. The winning submission will be published in the Administrative Law Section newsletter and the winner will be awarded $1,000. Get more information and competition rules in this handout.

The TBA Health Law Section will host a free webinar on Dec. 11 on artificial intelligence (AI), and how health care-related businesses can build a viable AI Governance Program. AI applications have long been used to create health plans and technology services for decision support, back-office transactions, claims processing, supply management, surgical robotics and more. The growth in AI technology, however, has led to enforcement actions and lawsuits, making it important for companies to be aware of new standards. One hour of general CLE credit is available for a $50 processing fee.

The TBA Elder Law Section will host a free webinar for TBA members on Dec. 14 to explore ethical issues when representing older clients. The presentation will delve into questions involving what to do when you suspect a client is mentally impaired, who the client really is when family members show up for the legal consultation, the ethical duties required when children pay for work done for their parents, and more. The TBA Appellate Practice Section will host a free webinar on Dec. 12 at noon CST to review of the nuts and bolts of e-filing in Tennessee appellate courts. Panelists will provide tips on best practices and share feedback from appellate court clerks on how to successfully navigate the appellate e-filing system. Questions are welcome. The TBA Criminal Justice Section will host a free webinar on Sept. 6 regarding juvenile justice for criminal law practitioners. The one-hour event will cover the basics for lawyers tackling their first juvenile case, including best practices, transfer hearings, new laws and more. Panelists include federal prosecutor and TBA Criminal Justice Section Immediate Past Chair Sean Deitrick, supervisor of the Knox County Public Defenders Office's Youth Defense Unit Christina Kleiser, Williamson County Juvenile Court Judge Sharon Guffee and juvenile defense attorney Wenke West. One hour of general CLE credit is available for a $50 processing fee.

The 21st edition of the Alimony Bench Book is now available. Published by the TBA’s Family Law Section, the book provides a ready resource for dealing with alimony cases in Tennessee. Current Family Law Section members can access their copy at no cost on the Family Law eCommunity page, but must be logged into their TBA account. Others may purchase an electronic copy for $25, a hard copy in loose-leaf format for $40, or a hard copy in a binder for $50 from the TBA Store.

TBA's Estate Planning Section is offering a free virtual program on March 30 to explore how forensic genealogy can be used in the legal setting. Christine E.
