Effective July 1, lawyers will have to comply with new redaction rules for filings in Tennessee’s appellate courts. The TBA Appellate Practice Section will host a free webinar on the new rules and how they will significantly change the process for writing and filing briefs with the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Court of Criminal Appeals and Supreme Court. Appellate practitioners Jacob Vanzin, Ben Raybin and William Gill will explore the rules and offer a primer on how to comply with the new requirements. TBA's Elder Law Section and Criminal Justice Section will present a free webinar on Friday on how to identify medically-impaired older drivers. The virtual session will feature occupational therapist Cody Stoval, one of eight certified driving rehabilitation specialists in Tennessee, who will offer insight and describe the process of reporting impaired drivers to the Tennessee Department of Driver Improvement. There is still time to register for this opportunity to learn how common diagnoses could present in your practice, and how community resources can assist if driving retirement is necessary. Entries for the TBA Administrative Law Section's Annual Writing Competition for law students currently enrolled in a Tennessee law school are due April 30. The section hosts the competition to promote an interest in and understanding of administrative law in the state, and to strengthen the relationship among administrative law professors, students and practitioners in Tennessee. The winning submission will be published in the Administrative Law Section newsletter and the winner will be awarded $1,000. View the competition rules for more information.

More than 250 lawyers attended the 2026 Estate Planning & Probate Forum on Friday at the Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin. The program offered seven hours of continuing legal education, including one hour of dual credit, and featured sessions on litigation and estate planning, public receivership, a probate panel and a legislative update. Speakers included Estate Planning & Probate Section Chair Robert Malin as well as Rebecca Blair, Chancellor William Cole, Arthur Cook, Jennifer Exum, Donald Farinato, General Sessions Judge Toby Gilley, Zachary Glaser, Lisa Helton, Robin Miller, David Parsons, Al Secor, Andrea Sinclair, Jared Smith and Ashley Stearns. Attendees also were able to interact with 17 exhibitors who were on hand to promote services and products that benefit estate planning practioners. See photos from the event.

The TBA Criminal Justice Section and the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities on Monday, March 23 will provide a free webinar focused on working with clients who have developmental disabilities. This primer will kick off a series of deeper discussions about topics regarding developmental disabilities and how these disabilities are considered in Tennessee courts. The TBA Attorney Well Being Committee will host a “Seasonal Support for Lawyers: Helping with the Holiday Blues” webcast on Dec. 18 from 11 a.m. to noon CST. The free session will offer an empathetic discussion about the increased pressures many legal professionals face during the holiday season and provide guidance on navigating stress for a healthier experience. Panelists will address real challenges confronting lawyers today and highlight resources available to support attorney well-being. On Nov. 18, the TBA Appellate Practice Section will host a free webinar titled "Application Granted: Strategies for Seeking Permission to Appeal Under Tenn. Rule of Appellate Procedure 11." The session will provide guidance for lawyers seeking permission to appeal a civil or criminal case to the state Supreme Court. Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Jeff Bivins, court staff attorneys Elizabeth Ryan and Edmund Sauer, and experienced appellate practitioners Brennan Wingerter and Kristine Roberts will share best practices, lessons learned and practical advice for getting an application granted.
