Bullying and sexual harassment are not uncommon in the legal profession, according to a recently released global survey of nearly 7,000 lawyers in 135 countries. One in three female lawyers have been sexually harassed in a work context, while one in two women have experienced bullying in the workplace. In its coverage of the survey, the ABA Journal notes that the numbers were somewhat lower for male lawyers. One in 14 men reported sexual harassment in the work context, while one in three have experienced bullying in a legal workplace.

A new report shows that more than half of law firms in 2018 offered flexible work arrangements, The ABA Journal reports. Legal services provider Special Counsel produced the report, called the 2019 Salary Guide for Legal Professionals. Respondents also reported that 49.6 percent of firms offered paid maternity and paternity leave, 19.6 offered paid volunteer time and 13 percent provided on-site emergency child care.

In a new item in the American Bar Association's Legal Rebels podcast, a legal technology company founder makes the case for chatbots. Tom Martin, founder of LawDroid and former practicing lawyer, says that chatbots can take control of mundane interactions and free up time for for meaningful time with clients. Chatbots can answer questions about the lawyers who work there and the services they provide, as well as schedule clients for consultations, Martin says. Hear more at Legal Rebels.

A new, American Bar Association-recognized law incubator — the first of its kind in the state — has launched in Knoxville this year. Called the Tennessee Law Lab Inc., the non-profit organization aims to provide a “solid foundation for new attorneys, solo practitioners and small firms.” The Law Lab is membership-based, and provides workspace and other offices services like parking, receptionist services and conference rooms. Above the Law’s Law2020 project takes a look at how artificial intelligence and data analytics are changing how attorneys conduct their legal research. Though the process of legal research has been greatly improved since the dawn of online databases like Westlaw, LexisNexis and Fastcase, sheer overload of information, lack of time to parse through data and lack of confidence in the results raise concerns. Artificial intelligence and analytics are beginning to be combined to in an effort to produce more relevant and predictive results for queries – a practice that will only become more widespread in the future.

“Law has operated as a guild – not a competitive market – until recently,” said Mark A. Cohen for Forbes magazine. “And that is the seminal reason why lawyers are so expensive.” In an op-ed, Cohen examines why legal work costs what it does and how consumer demands are changing the market. “Consumers, not lawyers, are now driving the bus,” he said. Cohen separates the legal “profession” from the “business", noting that while lawyers are involved in both, they are two sides that don’t always work towards the same goals.
