The City of Chattanooga’s Department of Equity and Community Engagement will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 17, the Chattanoogan reports. Honoring the 2022 theme, “The Beloved Community … ”It Starts With Me!”, a short program will be held to kick off a donation drive that will be open from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. EST at City Hall. Mayor Tim Kelly will give welcome remarks, followed by music by The Littleton Mason Singers, a spoken-word performance by Jayden Coleman and reflections on service from the Mayor’s Youth Council. The NAACP will also be in attendance to conduct voter registration and a membership drive. Donations will benefit organizations located in the ML King Boulevard and 11th Street area, including Arts Build, The Community Kitchen, Patten Towers residents and more. Items needed are gently-used clothing, non-perishable food items, art supplies and personal hygiene products such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap and disposable masks.

The MLK Commemorative Commission of Knoxville has announced it will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a week-long celebration beginning on Jan. 7 and leading up to MLK Day on Jan. 17. The 2022 King Week Celebration will feature an MLK Gallery of Arts Tribute, a leadership educational symposium for dialogue on social justice issues, an oratorical contest for middle and high school students and much more. On Jan. 17, people will march in the yearly Memorial March Parade from Chilhowee Park to Overcoming Believers Church on Harriet Tubman Street at 8:30 a.m. EST, followed by a memorial tribute service at Overcoming Believers Church. The Knoxville Barristers will host the 2022 Knoxville regional high school mock trial competition, a joint competition between Districts 2, 3 and 4, in March. Rounds 1-4 will take place on March 4-5 at the Knoxville City County Building. The final round will occur on March 6 at Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law. Vanderbilt University has announced the schedule for its 2022 series honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme of this year’s four-day virtual event is “Where We Belong—Building an Inclusive Community.” The kickoff lunch and speaker event will begin on Jan. 14 with keynote remarks from Equity Alliance Co-Founder Charlane Oliver. A joint day of service will be held on Jan. 15, which offers students from local colleges an opportunity to add a service component to MLK Day. On Jan. 17, a virtual candlelight vigil will be held at 4:30 p.m. CST, followed by a keynote presentation from poet, professor and author Nikky Finney. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold its next free webinar on state tax issues on Dec. 28 at 9 a.m. CST. This second December session will focus on reporting out-of-state sales by delivery destination as well as a number of important changes that have been made to the filing process for these sales. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of department staff.

The first 15 callers will be accepted. Then on Wednesday, LAS will hold a clinic specifically for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. The Nashville Chapter of the American Constitution Society will hold its annual U.S. Supreme Court Preview on Wednesday at noon CST. The one-hour presentation will feature Erwin Chemerinsky, dean and professor of law at the University of California Berkeley School of Law.
