The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold a clinic tomorrow from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Belmont University, 2005 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37204. Next week, the group will hold a phone clinic on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m. The first 15 callers will be accepted. Then on Wednesday, LAS will hold a clinic specifically for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. All times central. YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee will present “Stand Against Racism: The Importance of HBCUs and MSIs” on Jan. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. CST. The program will explore the role historically black colleges and universities and minority serving institutions play in preparing underrepresented students for graduate and professional school and creating a diverse workforce. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold its next free webinar on state tax issues on Jan. 25 at 9 a.m. CST. This session will focus on recent changes to the Tennessee Taxpayer Access Point (TNTAP) tax filing website and tips for navigating the site. The Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic is a joint project of the KBA/Barristers Access to Justice Committees, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, the UT College of Law, LMU- Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. This is a general advice and referral clinic that requires attorney volunteers for its continued operation. The next Veterans Legal Clinic will be held in person at the Knoxville Community Law Office on Feb. 9 from noon until 2 p.m. EST. Attorneys can register online to volunteer at the clinic.

The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in providing free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic on Jan. 17, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Issues to be covered include questions about business formation, corporate governance, contract review and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible businesses may receive up to one hour of assistance. Companies may sign up online through Jan. 14. Appointments are first-come, first-serve. Lawyers who would like to volunteer for the clinic should email vlpa@abcnashville.org.

Due to potential inclement weather, the Legal Aid Society's (LAS) McHugh Legal Clinic scheduled for tomorrow in Nashville has been canceled. Next week, LAS will hold three clinics. On Tuesday, a phone clinic will begin at 2 p.m. On Wednesday, a clinic specifically for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. On Thursday, a clinic will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Greenhouse Ministries, 309 S. Spring St., Murfreesboro 37130. All times central. Lincoln Memorial University’s Duncan School of Law will hold its annual law review symposium on Feb. 4. This year’s event, “Artificial Intelligence in the Law,” will explore the effect of algorithms on judicial decision-making. The school notes that algorithms are being used in various jurisdictions to determine whether to detain defendants pretrial, in sentencing and parole decisions, and to assess the statistical probability of future criminal behavior. The symposium seeks to assess whether such algorithms are effective, unbiased and helpful, and whether judicial decision-makers should embrace the technology. The Vanderbilt Law Immigration Practice Clinic and Justice for Our Neighbors will hold a free virtual training for lawyers willing to provide pro bono representation to Afghans who have resettled in Nashville and need pro bono assistance to file their applications for asylum. Since the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, 83,000 Afghans have arrived in the United States including approximately 300 in the Nashville area. The training will provide a broad overview of asylum and the elements of applying for asylum. The session will be held Jan. 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. CST. Register here.

The City of Chattanooga’s Department of Equity and Community Engagement will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 17, the Chattanoogan reports. Honoring the 2022 theme, “The Beloved Community … ”It Starts With Me!”, a short program will be held to kick off a donation drive that will be open from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. EST at City Hall. Mayor Tim Kelly will give welcome remarks, followed by music by The Littleton Mason Singers, a spoken-word performance by Jayden Coleman and reflections on service from the Mayor’s Youth Council. The NAACP will also be in attendance to conduct voter registration and a membership drive. Donations will benefit organizations located in the ML King Boulevard and 11th Street area, including Arts Build, The Community Kitchen, Patten Towers residents and more. Items needed are gently-used clothing, non-perishable food items, art supplies and personal hygiene products such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap and disposable masks.
