The Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic is a joint project of the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. This is a general advice and referral clinic which requires attorney volunteers for its continued operation. The next clinic will be held in person at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., on April 13 from noon to 2 p.m. Sign up here.

The Knoxville Bar Association will hold its annual Law Day luncheon on April 29 at the Hilton Knoxville Downtown. The event will showcase the work of the association and its young lawyers group, the Barristers. The Barristers also will present the Law & Liberty Award. This year’s Law Day theme, “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change,” explores the provisions of the Constitution that delegate power, articulate rights and offer mechanisms for change.

The Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is seeking speakers for its annual educational conference set for Aug. 15-17 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. The bureau specifically is looking for engaging and informative presentations that can improve injury outcomes, cooperation between stakeholders and the quality and efficiency of the state workers' compensation system. Topics should be of interest to a potential audience of 400+ that will include employers and human resource representatives, employee representatives, plaintiff and defense attorneys, insurance carriers and adjusters, nurse case managers, risk managers, health care providers and safety professionals. Requests to present should be sent to tn.workcomp@tn.gov by May 13 and include the name(s) of the presenter(s), a summary of the topic(s) to be discussed, learning objectives and a biography of each presenter. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold three clinics this week. On Tuesday, the group will hold a general clinic at 4:40 p.m. at the Gallatin Civic Center, 210 Albert Gallatin Ave., 37066. On Wednesday, a clinic for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT in Nashville at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., 37203. Then on Thursday, a clinic will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. at Greenhouse Ministries, 309 S. Academy St., Murfreesboro, 37130. All times central. Those attending must wear a mask. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold a free legal advice clinic on Saturday in Nashville. The in-person clinic will run from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. CDT at McHugh Clinic at Belmont, 2005 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37204. Those coming in-person are required to wear a mask. The Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law student chapter of the Federalist Society will host a Q&A event with new Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sarah Campbell on April 14. Topics will include jurisprudence, federal and state courts, the Supreme Court and more. The event will take place from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. EDT in Room 340 of the law school. Knoxville Legal Ministry at Cokesbury, in partnership with Administer Justice, will hold a legal advice clinic from 9 a.m. to noon EDT on April 9. Volunteer attorneys are needed to staff the clinic. To volunteer or for more information contact Crystal Schrof. Administer Justice is a national non-profit that works with local churches to provide civil legal services for those in need. Legal issues may range from landlord-tenant to applying for disability benefits. Malpractice insurance is provided.

The American Bar Association, its Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defense and Task Force on Eviction, Housing Preservation and Equity will host a free one-hour webinar on Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT to help lawyers learn about best practices for preventing evictions. The ABA has adopted 10 guidelines for residential evictions, which focus on how to assist tenants with eviction matters, including due process protections, right to counsel, eviction diversion programs and data privacy protections. During the webinar, attendees will hear examples from around the country about how these guidelines are being put in action.

A 102-year-old military veteran who was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg war crimes trials will share his story of hope and justice with a Nashville audience on April 26, in partnership with Chabad of Nashville. Benjamin B. Ferencz “reminds us that we all have a responsibility to take a stand against injustice today,” said Rabbi Yitzchok Tiechtel with Chabad of Nashville. “His story is powerful and moving, and I’m confident that every attendee, whether virtual or in-person, will be inspired by his message to live more purposefully and intentionally.” General admission tickets start at $15 for virtual and $25 for in-person attendees at Congregation Micah in Brentwood.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division will host an expungement clinic in partnership with Belmont Law and the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands on April 6 starting at 5 p.m. CDT. The clinic will take place in Murfreesboro at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 907 East Main St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130. Volunteer attorneys and law students are needed to review criminal records, help clients fill out expungement paperwork and advise clients on completing the expungement process. No prior expungement experience is necessary. To volunteer, contact YLD Access to Justice Coordinator Alix Rogers, 615-460-8250.
