During its annual convention in Memphis next week, the National Bar Association will present a free showing of the Netflix documentary “CIVIL,” which features its past president Ben Crump. The showing will take place on July 26 from 3-5 p.m. CDT in Ballroom A of the Renasant Convention Center, 255 N Main St., Memphis, TN 38103. The viewing will be followed by a special question and answer time with Crump and current NBA President Carlos E. Moore.

The long awaited finale of the Woman Suffrage Centennial celebration is coming soon to Knoxville’s historic Bijou Theatre. “A Vote of Her Own” musical tells the story of the last campaign to win voting rights for American Women in 1920, including the efforts of Tennessee legislators to ratify the 19th Amendment. The show, which will be presented for just one night, is the culmination of celebrations across the state that began in 2020 to mark the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. It had been delayed by pandemic concerns. Purchase tickets for the musical or for a reception following the presentation with the stars of the show.

The Court Improvement Program will sponsor attendance at the Fall 2022 Red Book Training Series, presented by the National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC). The virtual training series is being offered to parent attorneys, guardian ad litems, judicial officers, juvenile court staff and other individuals working in the state’s child welfare system. The seven-week training focuses on a broad array of topics in child welfare law and core dependency practice. Sessions will be held via Zoom on Thursdays at 4 p.m. CDT from Sept. 8 to Oct. 27. The next Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic — a joint project of Knoxville area legal organizations — will take place this Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. This general advice and referral clinic is supported by the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. Sign up here to volunteer. Masks are optional but should be worn pursuant to CDC guidelines.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee will hold two legal clinics this month. The first, a general legal advice clinic, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon EDT on July 16 at the Chattanooga Hamilton County Family Justice Center. To volunteer, email Mary Frances DeVoe. The second, a family law and housing clinic, will be held July 23 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT in Knoxville. This clinic is being held in conjunction with the YWCA of Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley and will be held at the YWCA’s Phyllis Wheatley Center. The Legal Aid Society will host three in-person clinics in Davidson County this month, and lawyers are needed to volunteer one hour of their time to provide civil law advice to walk-in patrons. Topics typically include family law, housing, employment and probate matters. The first clinic will take place tomorrow from 8:30-10:30 a.m. CDT at the Belmont Ministry Center. A second clinic will take place at the Nashville Library on July 13 from 4-6 p.m. CDT. The third clinic will be held July 23 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. CDT at the Belmont Ministry Center. Volunteer lawyers are fully covered by malpractice insurance and supporting materials will be provided. Please email Kendra Cheek if you are interested in volunteering for any of these clinics. The TBA Young Lawyers Division, Belmont University College of Law and Legal Aid Society are teaming up for an expungement clinic July 16 in Nashville. The clinic will be held at 10 a.m. CDT at the law school. The Davidson County Clerk's Office will be on site to screen clients for eligibility and print out paperwork. Volunteer lawyers are needed to give advice on re-entry issues and to fill out expungement paperwork. RSVP by email to Belmont Law Public Interest Coordinator Alix Rogers. Young lawyers in Tennessee and other Southeastern states are invited to attend the Southeastern States Young Lawyers Regional Summit in Orlando on Sept. 22-24. The event, which will be held at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club, will bring together young lawyers for compelling continuing education programs, collaboration and networking opportunities. Programming will focus on marketing your practice, managing non-attorney staff, handling finances and promoting diversity and inclusion in the profession. Social events include an opening reception on Thursday night and an optional “Network Around the World” at Epcot’s International Wine & Food Festival on Saturday. The $250 early registration fee includes up to five hours of CLE credit, materials, admission to Thursday's Welcome Reception, and breakfast, beverage break and lunch on Friday. Register for the conference and be sure to book through the room block for discounted room rates.
