Memphis Area Legal Services Inc. (MALS) will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new offices on Friday at 4 p.m. CDT. The new offices are located at 200 Jefferson Ave., Memphis 38103, on the corner across from the state civil courthouse. The move is a key piece of MALS’s plan for enhanced provision of legal services to those most in need, according to a statement released about the event. The association has plans to reinstitute clinics — including the second Saturday legal clinic, Attorney of the Day courthouse clinic and Orange Mound Legal Clinic —that were paused during the pandemic. The Anderson County Bar Association will host a portrait unveiling and reception honoring Judge Donald Layton on Aug. 4 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Anderson County Courthouse, 100 N. Main St., Clinton 37716. The event will place in the General Sessions 1 Courtroom. The judge will be honored for his service as clerk and master from 1991 to 1998 and as General Sessions Division 1 judge from 1998 to 2022. Refreshments will be provided. West Tennessee Legal Services will host a legal clinic on Aug. 12 for clients needing simple wills and powers of attorney. Attorney participation in the clinic will be completely remote. Attorneys will be able to use WTLS software to autogenerate documents for the clients. To volunteer, email Andy Cole.

The Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) pro bono legal clinics are focused specifically on the needs of Nashville’s creative community. The next clinic for income-qualified artists, musicians and creatives will take place Aug. 10 from 6-8 p.m. CDT at McCabe Park Community Center, 101 46th Ave. N., Nashville 37209. The TBA Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands and Legal Aid of East Tennessee will host a virtual name change clinic on Aug. 20 and are in need of volunteers. A one-hour training will be provided from 9 to 10 a.m. CDT, immediately followed by the clinic from 10 a.m. to noon CDT. Volunteers will help members of the public fill out a name change petition, give advice about representing themselves in the filing and give them information on next steps. Four experts and a prominent legal journalist will join ABA President Reginald Turner on July 28 from noon to 1 p.m. EDT to discuss how new federal judges are changing the federal judiciary. The free one-hour online webinar – “The Changing Face of the Federal Judiciary: Is it Permanent or Temporary?” – coincides with the release of the 2022 ABA Profile of the Legal Profession, an annual compilation of statistics and trends among lawyers, judges and law students. New to the report this year is a lengthy statistical look at the changing federal judiciary.

Author and former TBA President Sam Elliott is set to be featured in the Southern Lit Alliance’s Chattanooga Author Showcase, the Hamilton County Herald reports. Elliott, who practices at Chattanooga’s Gearhiser, Peters, Lockaby, Cavett & Elliott, has written extensively about the Civil War in his works, which include “John C. Brown of Tennessee,” “Soldier of Tennessee” and “Isham G. Harris of Tennessee.” Elliott will be recognized alongside eight other local authors at the event on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. EDT at Stove Works Museum, 1250 E. 13th Street, Chattanooga. A reception will provide opportunities to talk with Elliott, purchase his books and hear him read excerpts from his works.
