The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society is hosting an in-person lunch program on Aug. 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT. The program will focus on “Remembering John L. Ryder and His Contributions to Election Law.” Presenters include U.S. District Judge Jon P. McCalla, Tennessee Deputy Attorney General Janet Kleinfelter, Tennessee Assistant Attorney General Pablo A. Donna Corbitt, administrator of the Knox County General Sessions Court, will retire on Aug. 31 after 26 years. A retirement reception will be held in the Small Assembly Room of the City County Building on Aug. 26 from 1-3 p.m. EDT. Corbitt has worked in legal administration for over half a century. In 1982, she transitioned to the Knox County District Attorney’s office, where she served for 14 years. Then in 1996, Corbitt was recruited by the Knox County General Sessions Judiciary to serve as the judicial court administrator. Read more from the court.

The Knoxville Bar Association and its Bankruptcy Section, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight, will hold a Pro Bono Debt Relief Clinic on Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT. The event will take place at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Judge Bauknight will present a short overview of the bankruptcy system and other solutions for clients before volunteer lawyers meet with them to discuss their options. Sign up to volunteer.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has announced its process for interviewing the six applicants for attorney general and reporter. The court will begin its consideration of the candidates on Aug. 8 in the Nashville Supreme Court Building, starting at 9:30 a.m. CDT. The proceedings also will be livestreamed on the court’s YouTube channel. The day will start with a general overview of the process. Then each applicant will have 10 minutes to introduce himself to the court. After introductions, members of the public may speak in opposition to any applicant for three minutes, and applicants will have three minutes to respond. The court will then conduct formal interviews of each applicant. At the end of the interview process, the court will deliberate on next steps. The process is expected to conclude on Aug. 9, pending completion of background checks.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee will hold a portrait unveiling and reception for former judge Harry S. Mattice next Friday. The event will take place at on the third floor of the Joel W. Solomon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 3 p.m. EDT.  A reception will follow in the courthouse. Mattice retired from the bench in September 2021 after serving the Eastern District for more than 20 years — first as U. S. attorney and later as district judge. He was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2005. Before entering federal service, Mattice was a shareholder with Baker Donelson and a partner at Miller & Martin in Chattanooga. He also served as a senior counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs during a special investigation.

The next Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic — a joint project of Knoxville area legal organizations — will take place Aug. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. This general advice and referral clinic is supported by the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. Sign up here to volunteer. The deadline to apply for the award-winning TBA Public Service Academy (PSA) has been extended until Friday. The PSA is a bipartisan, statewide effort to encourage attorneys to take on public service leadership roles in their communities and run for office. Those accepted for the program will take part in a two-day program Sept. 8-9, and a two-day program Nov. 18-19. Both sessions will be in Nashville featuring top political and campaign experts. You can apply online now or encourage your friends and colleagues who have aspirations for public service to apply.

The National Bar Association (NBA) kicked off its 2022 Convention in Memphis yesterday — the first time in two years the group has held the gathering. "It was intentional to come to Memphis because of the history, all of the things going on downtown and the renaissance of Memphis, Judge Carlos Moore told The Commercial Appeal. Moore, NBA president and a managing partner of the Cochran Firm, said events throughout the week include keynote addresses, award ceremonies and social events. Individual tickets are available for certain events, including a Dru Hill concert tonight at 9 p.m. CDT, the Power 50 Luncheon on Wednesday and the NAACP Memphis Branch Freedom Fund Luncheon on Saturday.
