Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will host its annual fundraiser, the Justice for All Ball, on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. CDT. The event will be held at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education in Memphis and will feature dinner from Chef Phillip Dewayne and entertainment from the Stax Music Academy Band, the Beale Street Flippers and the PC Band. Proceeds from the event will benefit MALS and support attorneys offering pro bono legal services to the underserved population in Memphis. The American Bar Association Section of Science & Technology Law will hold its 2022 AI and Robotics National Institute virtually next week on Monday and Tuesday. The event, now in its fourth year, will focus on key technical concepts in artificial intelligence and robotics including data protection, machine learning, the metaverse, AI best practices, intellectual property, AI and robotics ethical obligations, and legal and ethical issues around lab-grown brains. The Knoxville Bar Association and its Barristers group will welcome new lawyers to the practice at an event on Oct. 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. EDT at the University of Tennessee Gardens Friendship Pavilion. The evening, which also will serve as a member appreciation event, will include refreshments, music and good company. Tickets are available for $15 each before Oct. 14 and $20 per ticket after that. The Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation will hold the 22nd Annual Dick Jerman Memorial Golf Tournament on Oct. 24 at Indian Hills Golf Course, 405 Calumet Trace, Murfreesboro 37127. A portrait unveiling will take place Monday for former Shelby County Circuit Court Judge James F. Russell. The event will be held at the Memphis Botanic Garden from 4-5:30 p.m. CDT. Russell, who decided not to seek reelection this year, was appointed to the court in 1998. A 1970 graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law, he was in private practice at Apperson, Crump, Duzane & Maxwell before joining the court. While serving as a judge, Russell received the Memphis Bar Association’s 2000 Charles A. Rond Outstanding Judge of the Year Award and served on the Judicial Ethics Committee and Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission. He is a former chair of the Tennessee Judicial Conference’s ADR Committee, program chair of the Leo Bearman Sr. American Inn of Court and president of the Memphis Bar Association.

The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in providing free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic on Oct. 20. Issues to be covered include questions about business formation, corporate governance, contract review and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible businesses may receive up to one hour of assistance but must register by Oct. 17. Clients may sign up online. To volunteer, email vlpa@abcnashville.org.

A portrait unveiling and reception honoring Davidson Circuit Court Judge Hamilton Gayden will take place Oct. 20 at the historic county courthouse in downtown Nashville. The event will be held on the fifth floor from 3-5 p.m. CDT. Gayden decided last year not to seek reelection in 2022. He was appointed in 1974 by then-Gov. Winfield Dunn and served 47 years on the bench. "It's been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Davidson County,” Gayden said in a statement. “I will miss being on the bench but at 82 years old, it is time to hand the gavel over to a younger judge."
