The Belmont University College of Law’s Legal Aid Society is holding a golf tournament on March 31 from 1-5 p.m. CST at the Towhee Golf Club in Spring Hill. Money raised during the "Putt for Pro Bono" tournament will be used for pro bono student stipends. A portrait unveiling and reception will take place Jan. 31 to honor retiring Anderson County Chancellor M. Nichole Cantrell. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. EST in the chancery courtroom of the Anderson County Courthouse, 100 N. Main St., Clinton 37716. Cantrell has served as chancellor since 2014. Prior to taking the bench, she was in private practice.

The TBA YLD is hosting a Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) Free Legal Answers Clinic on Thursday at 5 p.m. CST. Attorneys can volunteer virtually or come in person to Belmont University College of Law where they will be paired up with law students and answer legal questions submitted on the TN Free Legal Answers site. The YLD is seeking a firm to provide pizza for dinner for the volunteers. For more information, contact Alix Rogers.

The YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee will host its next Stand Against Injustice virtual lunch and learn on Jan. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. CST. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee will host a formal investiture tomorrow for U.S. Magistrate Judge Jill E. McCook. Chief U.S. District Judge Travis R. McDonough will preside over the Knoxville ceremony and U.S. District Judge Thomas A. Varlan will make remarks and administer the oath of office. McCook took office on Jan. 31, 2022, succeeding U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Bruce Guyton, who will also speak at the ceremony. Retired U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Clifford Shirley Jr. will give the invocation. Knoxville Bar Association President Loretta G. Cravens will present McCook with a commemorative robe and Wayne A. Ritchie II will make comments as chair of the Merit Selection Panel. The event will start at 10 a.m. EST. in the ceremonial courtroom of the Howard H. Baker Jr. U.S. Courthouse. A reception will be held following the ceremony in the breezeway of the courthouse.

Join the TBA for a panel discussion on diversifying the judicial branch on Jan. 23 from noon to 1:30 p.m. CST. Produced by the TBA Committee on Racial & Ethnic Diversity, this free event is the first part of a series focused on providing minority lawyers the tools needed when seeking judgeships. The series will feature candid discussions on preparation for running, financing, campaigning, transition of practice and other needs. Panelists include Mary Beard, Judge Ana L. The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis has announced it will debut a new photography exhibit, hold a blood drive and take up food donations in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, the Associated Press reports. Among the museum’s planned events is the launch of “Tarred Healing,” a photographic exhibition by Black photographer Cornell Watson. Musical performances, magic shows, craft activities and other events are also planned. Those who donate blood will receive express entry into the museum on King Day and will receive additional free admission for up to four people on any day in 2023. Visitors also are encouraged to bring items for the annual Mid-South Food Bank food drive. Read more about the celebration on the Civil Rights Museum’s website.

The TBA Book Club will hold its second discussion event this week on Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. CST via Zoom. Members chose Jodi Picoult’s “Small Great Things” as the group’s second quarter book selection. The novel focuses on a Black labor and delivery nurse who is assigned to a child of white supremacists. The TBA will welcome author, poet and African American literature and cultural history expert Darius Stewart to the meeting as a special guest to provide context and insight into the book. Former TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson will lead the discussion. Register for the event.

The Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) pro bono legal clinics are focused specifically on the needs of Nashville’s creative community. The next clinic for income-qualified artists, musicians and creatives will take place Feb. 1 from 6-8 p.m. CST at Sevier Park Community Center, 3021 Lealand Ln., Nashville 37204.
