The Knoxville Lawyers Chapter of The Federalist Society will hold a reception with Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti on Feb. 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m. EST. The event will take place at Chesapeake's West Knoxville, 9630 Parkside Dr., Knoxville 37922. The price is $20 for members and $30 for non-members. Light food and drinks provided. Register online.

The Tennessee Faith and Justice Alliance will host a free general legal advice clinic in Knoxville on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon EST. The clinic will take place at City Church, 522 Sevier Ave., Knoxville 37920. It is coordinated by the Knoxville Bar Association, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the University of Tennessee College of Law and LMU Duncan School of Law. No appointment is necessary. Attorney volunteers are being sought for multiple mock trial competitions across the state. Next week, on Feb. 3-5, the University of Memphis School of Law will be hosting the Region 8 National Mock Trial Regional Competition and is looking for attorneys to serve as judges. Sign up here to help. Later in February, the Memphis Bar Association is looking for volunteers for its local high school competition, which will take place Feb. 17-19. Sign up here. Finally, the Tennessee State High School Competition, hosted by the TBA Young Lawyers Division, is seeking judges, lawyers and law students to serve in various roles. Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold three legal clinics in February. The “Attorney of the Day Clinic” will take place Feb. 2 and 16 from 1-3 p.m. CST at the Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave., Room 134, Memphis 38103. The monthly clinic at the Benjamin Hooks Library will take place Feb. 11 beginning at 10 a.m. The library is located at 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will host a free webinar Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 9 a.m. CT to learn more about the state's expanded agricultural sales tax exemption. The event will take place at 9 a.m. CT and focus on a new state law that allows qualified farmers and nursery operators to purchase tangible personal property used primarily in agricultural operations free from sales and use tax. Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the Knoxville Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee are set to host a Black-Owned Business Legal Advice Clinic on Feb. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. EST at the Knoxville Area Urban League. The clinic will provide legal guidance for Black-owned business owners to help them navigate legal issues and have the opportunity to meet individually with attorneys to ask questions and seek advice. University of Tennessee College of Law Professor Eric Amarante will start the clinic with a presentation on legal and business issues that affect business ventures and other tips on how to protect and enforce their legal rights. The Young Lawyers Committee of the Nashville Federalist Society is hosting a work/life balance event this Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. CST at the Union Stockyards Nashville Apartments, 222 Stockyard St., Nashville 37201. “Married to the Law” will feature Michael and Rachel Harmon as they talk about how they balance work, hobbies and family life. Michael is general counsel for the Tennessee Secretary of State and a former partner at Waller. Rachel is deputy director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, a former attorney in the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, and a triathlete. The American Bar Association will hold its Midyear Meeting in New Orleans Feb. 2-6. The ABA House of Delegates — the  policy-making body — will meet in person on Feb. 6 and consider a range of proposals. Programming is also planned for attendees covering topics such alternatives to traditional juvenile justice measures, U.S. reproductive rights since the Dobbs decision, racial and gender inequity in the legal profession, use of extraordinary writs, prosecutorial bias and misconduct, and voting rights. Read more about these and other sessions. On Feb. 4, the TBA will host a Tennessee Reception honoring former TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson. If you are in town please join in!

The organizers of Vanderbilt University Law School’s 1L Mock Trial Tournament are in need of lawyers to score the competition’s preliminary rounds, which will take place Jan. 28 and 29 at the law school in Nashville. The tournament will include two trials and run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST each day. Lunch will be provided for volunteers. For more information or to volunteer please contact Isaak Elkind.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division has opened its 2023-2024 leadership appointment and election filing process. Those interested in an appointed position on the division's board should review available positions and complete the online application by Feb. 28. For positions subject to election, nominating petitions should be filed with YLD Secretary Ross Smith no later than Feb. 15. Elections will be held for vice president, secretary, treasurer, East Tennessee governor, Middle Tennessee governor and West Tennessee governor. During this cycle, vice president candidates must reside in the Eastern Grand Division. Additionally, district representatives in odd-numbered districts will be elected for two-year terms. Elections for any contested races will take place between March 1 and April 1 by electronic voting.
