The bar associations of Hamblen, Hawkins and Greene counties will host a meet and greet for newly confirmed Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Mary Wagner. The event will take place April 26 from 5-8 p.m. EDT at Morristown Landing, 4355 Durham Landing, Morristown 37814. Refreshments will be provided. Wagner, who currently serves on the Shelby County Circuit Court, was confirmed by the Tennessee General Assembly on March 11. She will join the Supreme Court after Justice Roger A. The American Bar Association (ABA) will present results from the sixth ABA Survey of Civic Literacy during a free virtual event on April 23 beginning at 10 a.m. EDT. Conducted annually, the survey measures the civics knowledge of the American public as well as views on a range of topical issues. During the event, Judy Woodruff, senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour, will moderate a panel discussion featuring a Harvard University professor, a writer and editor at Protect Democracy, and federal appellate judge. The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) has extended the deadline for submitting session proposals for this year's Equal Justice University (EJU). Proposals are now due April 24. Topics of interest include employment law, family law, health and benefits, housing and consumer, special education and juvenile justice, as well as professionalism. See all topics and submit proposals online. The 2024 EJU is set for Aug. 28-30 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro.

The 2024 Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative (CCPBI) Gala will be held Saturday evening at the Nashville office of Bass, Berry & Sims, located at the Pinnacle at Symphony Place. The event will be a cocktail supper, with live music and a brief presentation, including awarding the inaugural Branham Grants. The CCPBI, a partnership between the TBA Access to Justice Committee, TBA Corporate Counsel Section and the Tennessee Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, established the grants in honor of long-time access to justice champion Andy Branham, who died in 2022. The Branham Grants support pro bono projects designed to provide civil legal resources and support for people with, affected by, or at risk for addiction in Tennessee, as well as those in recovery. The Diane Nash Plaza in front of the Metro Nashville Courthouse will be dedicated to the civil rights leader on April 20. The celebration will commence with a press conference at 8:30 a.m. CDT at the historic First Baptist Capitol Hill Church, immediately followed by a parade to the Plaza, featuring high school bands and many local organizations, civic leaders and other civil rights icons. The dedication will begin at 10 a.m. Nash rose to prominence as an activist, leader and strategist in the student wing of the Civil Rights Movement. The Tennessee Tribune has more information.

East Tennessee Lawyers’ Association For Women (ETLAW) will host its annual Tennessee Supreme Court Luncheon on May 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT. In addition to compelling CLE, social events and networking opportunities, the 2024 TBA Annual Convention will include meetings of TBA's governing bodies. On June 12, the House of Delegates will meet in the afternoon, while new section chairs will meet to make plans for the 2024-2025 bar year. On June 14, the TBA Board of Governors and its Executive Committee will meet after the Lawyers Luncheon. Later that afternoon, the Tennessee Legal Community Foundation (TLCF) and TBA Member Insurance Solutions (TBAMS) will hold their respective board meetings. Wrapping up the day, the Young Lawyers Division's (YLD) Long Range Planning Committee will meet and all young lawyer members of the TBA will gather for the division's annual meeting. On June 15, members of the YLD Board will meet for committee breakouts and their summer board meeting. Check out the full convention schedule and make plans to be in Memphis June 12-15!

The Knoxville Bar Association and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET), will hold a Debt Relief Clinic to provide pro bono legal services to income-eligible consumer debtors in Knox, Blount, Loudon and Sevier counties. The clinic will begin at 8:45 a.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Attorneys will volunteer to conduct initial meetings with the clients to discuss their situations and options. Those interested in helping, or those seeking advice, should call the LAET office at 865-637-0484. The deadline for client registration is April 26.

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals will hold a Bench Bar Reception on April 30 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. CDT at the Tempo Hotel, 127 Rosa L. Parks Blvd., Nashville 37203. The Community Legal Center (CLC), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, has two events planned this weekend. On Saturday morning, the CLC and the Memphis City Council will co-host a free estate planning legal clinic. The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CDT at the Bert Ferguson Park & Community Center, 8505 Trinity Rd., Cordova 38018. View a flyer for the clinic. Then on Saturday evening, the center will hold its annual fundraising event “Celebrating Everyday People,” set for 7 p.m. at the STAX Recording Museum. Tickets are available here.
