The Gray, Tennessee, office of the Bureau of Workers Compensation will hold an open house on March 1 to commemorate its fifth anniversary. The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon EST. Light refreshments will be served. The office reports that “just shy of five years ago” it opened its doors for the first time for parties seeking settlement approvals. Read more here.

Plan now to take part in the Tennessee Bar Association’s TBA Day on the Hill on March 22. The event gives TBA members an opportunity to meet with their legislators and talk to them about issues important to the profession, such as the professional privilege tax and funding for indigent representation. Activities begin with a luncheon, followed by meetings with legislators in the afternoon, and the annual Big Shrimp legislative reception that night. Sign up now to take part.

Registration is now open for the Legal Aid Society’s 5th Annual Breakfast of Champions set for April 5 in Nashville. The breakfast, which will run from 8-9 a.m. CDT at City Winery, is the group’s signature fundraising event. Funds raised will directly impact low-income and vulnerable communities in Middle Tennessee.

Kevin G. Ritz will be formally installed as the 51st U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee this Friday at 2 p.m. CST. The ceremony will take place at the Memphis City Hall City Council Chambers, 125 N. Main St., Memphis 38103. S. Thomas Anderson, U.S. district judge for the Western District of Tennessee, will convene the event. Ritz was nominated for the post by President Joe Biden on July 29, 2022, and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Sept. 22, 2022. Read the release from Ritz's office. The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in providing free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic in Nashville on Feb. 16. Issues to be covered include questions about business formation, corporate governance, contract review and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible businesses may receive up to one hour of assistance but must register by Monday. Clients may sign up online. To volunteer, email vlpa@abcnashville.org.

The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will host Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sarah K. Campbell next Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST for in-person lunch. The next legal clinic for veterans in Knoxville will take place Wednesday from 12-2 p.m. EST at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office in Knoxville. This is a general advice clinic sponsored by the Knoxville Bar Association, KBA Barristers, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, the University of Tennessee College of Law, the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office and the local Veterans Affairs office. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will host its 5th Annual Breakfast of Champions on April 5 from 8-9 a.m. CDT at the City Winery in Nashville. The breakfast, LAS’ signature fundraising event, brings together Middle Tennessee’s legal community and business leaders in support of the organization. Funds raised at this event will directly impact the low-income and vulnerable communities of Middle Tennessee by providing free community education and legal representation against illegal evictions, domestic violence, predatory lending and elder abuse. The Memphis & Shelby County Justice & Safety Alliance is inviting the public to come together to process what the community has been going through, lift up the importance of relationships and solidarity during times of grief, support each other, and work for true systemic change. The Knoxville Bar Association and its Bankruptcy Section, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight, will hold a Pro Bono Debt Relief Clinic on Feb. 11 beginning at 8:45 a.m. EST. The event will take place at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Judge Bauknight will present a short overview of the bankruptcy system and other solutions for clients before volunteer lawyers meet with them to discuss their options. Sign up to volunteer online.
