The Women Law Students Association (WLSA) at Vanderbilt Law School is sponsoring career-oriented talks throughout March as part of Women’s History Month. Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. CST is a conversation with a first-generation woman lawyer, Kris Reliford, a partner at Bradley. March 24 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. will be a conversation with Courtney Urschel, deputy chief of the human rights and special prosecutions section of the Department of Justice.

A book reading and signing with former Tennessee Bar Journal Editor Suzanne Craig Robertson will take place in Knoxville on April 27 at 7 p.m. EDT at the Church of the Good Samaritan, 425 N. Cedar Bluff Rd., Knoxville 37923. The event, hosted by Union Ave. Books, will feature a reading from Robertson’s new book “He Called Me Sister” and a conversation between Robertson and Bishop Brian Cole. The book documents the relationship between death row inmate Cecil Johnson and Robertson’s family as Johnson’s case winds its way through the legal system ultimately culminating in his execution. The event is free but reservations are required. A similar event in Nashville a few weeks ago brought current and former TBA staff members and area lawyers and judges out for a memorable evening. The free legal advice clinic for nonprofits and Black-owned small businesses, originally planned for March 16, has been rescheduled to March 23. The clinic is sponsored by the Nashville Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts and the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings. Clients should sign up online by March 20. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold three clinics next week. On Wednesday, the group will hold a veterans clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Operation Stand Down in Nashville. On Thursday, a general advice clinic will take place at Greenhouse Ministries in Murfreesboro from 3 to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, a general advice clinic will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Belmont’s McHugh Clinic in Nashville. Join members of the TBA Attorney Well Being Committee for a live interactive roundtable for law students and young lawyers on how best to manage work-life balance as a legal professional. This 45-minute Zoom event on March 29 at noon CDT will feature seasoned lawyers discussing their day-to-day practice, and provide effective tools for personal well-being. The event is free and open to all currently enrolled law students and TBA members but reservations are required. Questions and feedback are encouraged for this interactive roundtable. The next legal clinic for veterans in Knoxville will take place Wednesday from 12-2 p.m. EST at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office in Knoxville. This is a general advice clinic sponsored by the Knoxville Bar Association, KBA Barristers, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, the University of Tennessee College of Law, the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office and the local Veterans Affairs office. The ABA will host its Law Day 2023 Launch Program on Monday from 4-5 p.m. EST. The program — held virtually with free registration — will provide suggestions and guidance to inspire people to plan and lead their own Law Day celebrations on May 1, the national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. This year's theme is “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility and Collaboration.” Register for the launch program and access Law Day resources online.

The official investiture ceremony and reception for U.S. Magistrate Judge Cynthia Richardson Wyrick has been rescheduled for May 19 at 1:30 p.m. EDT, the District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee has announced. The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings to provide free legal services for nonprofits and Black-owned small businesses in Nashville on March 16. Advice will cover business formation, corporate governance, contracts and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible entities may receive up to one hour of assistance.
