The Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold a free webinar on June 27 at 9 a.m. CDT for people interested in state tax issues for the hospitality industry. Participants will discuss how taxation affects food/beverage, lodging and recreation businesses in Tennessee. The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law Alumni Chapter will honor five Memphis-area lawyers at its annual Pillars of Excellence event set for Aug. 26 at the Fed Ex Forum. Those receiving awards are: Democratic U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen; Robert L. Dinkelspiel, founding member of Dinkelspiel Rasmussen & Mink; Mike McLaren, shareholder at Black McLaren Jones Ryland & Griffee; David Wade, shareholder and director at Martin Tate Morrow & Marston; and Ruby R. Wharton, founder and partner with The Wharton Law Firm. U.S. District Court Judge Phipps McCalla with the Western District of Tennessee will receive the 2023 Friend of the Law School award. The event will start with a reception at 6 p.m. CDT followed by dinner, awards and an after party. Proceeds from the evening will support the law school and student scholarships.

The Knoxville Bar Association's Bankruptcy Section, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) and with the support and involvement of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight, will hold a Debt Relief Clinic to provide pro bono legal services to income-eligible consumer debtors. LAET staff will screen potential clients and give instructions to complete a questionnaire and bring it along with tax returns and pay stubs to the clinic. The clinic will be held on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m.-noon EDT, in person at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty Street, Knoxville 37919.

A swearing-in ceremony will take place tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. CDT for 21st Judicial District Attorney General Stacey B. Edmonson, the Williamson Herald reports. Edmonson was appointed last month by Gov. Bill Lee to fill a vacancy created by the death of Kim Helper. The event will be held in the Cornelia A. Clark Courtroom in the historic courthouse in Franklin. The oath of office will be administered by Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Jeff Bivin. Edmonson has served the district for nearly two decades, most recently as deputy district attorney general, a role she has held for 12 years.

While Juneteenth is officially celebrated on June 19, the Tennessee State Museum will celebrate with a day-long event on Saturday. This year’s Juneteenth Celebration, “Looking to the Past to Empower the Future,” will feature an edition of the Museum's TN Writers | TN Stories series with New York Times author Sheree Renée Thomas. The museum will also host an "In Conversation" event with a group of panelists who will discuss beginner steps and best practices for preserving family history through material culture. Throughout the day, families can enjoy storytime and craft activities. There will also be a dance, poetry and music hour followed by a special panel discussion on preserving Black family history.

An investiture ceremony for Denise E. Barnett, bankruptcy judge for the Western District of Tennessee, will take place July 14 at 2 p.m. CDT. The ceremony will be held at Memphis City Hall, 125 N Main St., Memphis 38103. A reception will follow in the Hall of Mayors. Please RSVP by June 30 to barnett.rsvp@tnwb.uscourts.gov. Barnett was appointed to the post in 2021 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She previously was a trial attorney with the U.S. Justice Department’s trustee program. The Veterans Legal Advice Clinic is a general advice and referral clinic that serves between 20 and 30 veterans in the community each month with a wide variety of legal issues, including family law, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, criminal defense, consumer protection, contract disputes, child support and personal injury. Preregistration is not required for the in-person clinic, which will be held June 14 from noon-2 p.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender's Law Office, 1101 Liberty Street, Knoxville 37919.
