The investiture ceremony for incoming Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Dwight E. Tarwater will take place Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. EDT at the Tennessee Theatre, 604 S. Gay St., Knoxville 37902. Gov. Registration is now open for the TBA's Law & Culture in Ireland CLE program scheduled for May 2024. Two travel options are available: a four-night trip to Dublin and a six-night trip to Dublin and Belfast. In conjunction with CLE Abroad, travelers will engage with local experts, academics, officials and change makers who will offer in-depth commentary on the EU and UK legal-political systems, economics, environmental justice, history and religion. In Dublin, the group also will explore ancient castles, visit landmarks, museums and notable legal institutions, and sample local cuisine. In Belfast, travelers will learn about the region's unique political history, Good Friday Agreement, ongoing reconciliation efforts and peace process. Retiring Supreme Court Justice Sharon G. Lee will be honored on Aug. 24 at the Tennessee Supreme Court building in Knoxville with an unveiling of her portrait in the courtroom. The ceremony is open to the public and will be live streamed on the court’s YouTube page. In addition, Lee will be honored Aug. 25 at a dinner hosted by the Bradley County Bar Association at the Museum and Cultural Center at in Cleveland. A limited number of tickets are available from the Bradley County Bar Association. And on Aug. 29, the Nashville School of Law, the Nashville Bar Association, and the law firm of Dodson, Parker, Behm & Capparella will host a retirement celebration at the Nashville School of Law. Lee will retire Aug. 31.

The fourth annual Oye Vecino LIVE, set for Sept. 21, will include a panel discussion on immigration and a presentation by former civil rights attorney turned writer and performer Irma Herrera. The event will begin at 5 p.m. CDT in the auditorium of the Main Nashville Public Library. All proceeds will benefit Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors, which provides free or low-cost legal services to immigrants, educates the public about issues related to immigration and advocates for immigrant rights. The Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society will host a reception on Oct. 4 from 5:30-7 p.m CDT to honor the current, outgoing and new members of the court. Retiring Justice Sharon Lee and incoming Justice Dwight Tarwater specifically will be honored. The event will take place at the Nashville office of Holland & Knight, 511 Union St., Ste. 2700, Nashville 37219. For more information contact Stacie Beishuizen. The society was founded in 1995 to ensure the preservation and accessibility of the records of the court.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) is partnering with The Hub, which provides services and resources to Memphians experiencing homelessness, to host a free legal clinic next Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. CDT. The clinic, which will be held monthly on the fourth Wednesday, will take place at 590 Washington Ave., Memphis 38105. The 20th annual TBA Leadership Law (TBALL) program has launched their annual call for nominations for the 2024 class. Nominees should have from 5 to 15 years of experience in practice. Nominations are due Oct. 2. Last year, 33 lawyers from across the state were accepted into the program. TBALL programming will kick off in January 2024 with an opening retreat at Henry Horton State Park and end in June with class commencement during the TBA Annual Convention in Memphis. Memphis Area Legal Services will host its Attorney of the Day clinic this Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. CDT. During the clinic, volunteer attorneys will meet with pro se litigants to provide help and make referrals. Clients are seen on a first come first serve basis. The clinic takes place in Room 134 of the Judge D'Army Bailey Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave., Memphis 38103. Volunteer attorneys are needed to help. Sign up here.

Join members of the TBA Attorney Well Being Committee for a live interactive roundtable for law students and young lawyers on how best to manage work-life balance as a legal professional. This 45-minute Zoom event on March 28 at 12:30 p.m. CDT will feature seasoned lawyers discussing their day-to-day practice, and provide effective tools for personal well-being. The event is free and open to all currently enrolled law students and TBA members but registration is required. Questions and feedback are encouraged for this interactive roundtable. The TBA Young Lawyers Division will host two in-person Essential Documents for Essential Workers (EDEW) clinics on Aug. 26. One will be held at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office located at 940 New Salem Highway, Murfreesboro, 37129 from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. CDT. Volunteer attorneys are needed to meet with clients and enter clients’ information into software which will create the wills. No prior experience is needed. There will be a virtual training session for volunteers prior to the event. Contact YLD District Representative Morgan Hanna to sign up to volunteer and for any questions. The second will be from 9 a.m.-1:00 p.m. CDT at the Cookeville Police Department located at 1019 Neal Street, Cookeville, TN 38501. The EDEW program offers free wills, powers of attorney and advanced health care directives to essential workers and their spouses. Volunteer attorneys, notaries and witnesses are needed. You do not have to volunteer for the entire clinic. Contact YLD District Representative Amber Vargas to sign up or ask questions.
