A legal clinic for veterans, sponsored by Memphis Area Legal Services Inc. and the Memphis Bar Association, will be held in Memphis tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. CDT. The clinic will be moving back to an in-person forum at a new location — the Veterans Affairs’ (VA) social work offices at 575 Phelan Ave., Memphis 38126 — but virtual/telephonic options will still be available. Volunteers do not have to be certified by the VA to help. Cases include wills and estates, family law, child support, criminal defense, expungement, housing and consumer protection. Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold three legal clinics this week. On Tuesday, a clinic will be held at the Gallatin Civic Center, 210 Albert Gallatin Ave., from 4:30-5:30 p.m. CDT. On Wednesday, a legal clinic specifically for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37203. Nashville School of Law Dean William C. Koch Jr. has been selected to receive the 2023 American Inns of Court A. Sherman Christensen Award for distinguished, exceptional and significant leadership to the American Inns of Court movement at the local, state or national level. Koch will receive the award in October at the 2023 American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the United States. Koch has been a member of the organization since 1990 and its president from 2018-2020. Koch has served as president and dean of the Nashville School of Law since 2014, while also teaching constitutional law. He served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Tennessee from 2007 to 2014.

The Sevier County Bar Association is sponsoring the 9th Annual Sevier County Juvenile CLE Seminar on Oct. 24, with all proceeds benefiting the Women’s Recovery Home. The virtual program will include seven hours of CLE credit and will cover juvenile law topics applicable statewide. 

The Nashville Chapter of the American Constitutional Society is holding its annual U.S. Supreme Court Preview on Sept. 14 from noon to 1:30 p.m. CDT at the Nashville offices of Holland & Knight. A virtual attendance option also is available. The event will feature New York University School of Law professor Melissa Murray, co-author of “Cases and Materials on Reproductive Rights and Justice” and co-host of the Supreme Court podcast “Strict Scrutiny.”

The repayment pause on federal student loans ended Aug. 31. Interest will begin to accrue this month and payments will begin again in October. Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold its monthly clinic at the Benjamin Hooks Library this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon CDT. The library is located at 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111. Lawyers and non-lawyers are needed for this high-volume clinic. Questions commonly raised by clients include issues involving housing, family, consumer and employment law. A special invitation has been extended to those serving in the legal and law profession to celebrate the Annual Diocesan Red Mass at 5 p.m. CDT on Sept. 16 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1695 Central Ave., Memphis 38104. As a time-honored tradition of the Catholic Church, the Red Mass is celebrated for judges, attorneys, law school professors, students and government officials, invoking guidance for all who seek justice.

Memphis Area Legal Services will host its Attorney of the Day clinic on Sept. 7 beginning at 1 p.m. CDT. During the clinic, volunteer attorneys will meet with pro se litigants to provide help and make referrals. Clients are seen on a first come first serve basis.
