The YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee will hold its next “Stand Against Injustice” event on Jan. 31, 2024. The “Redrawing Democracy” session will feature Dr. Sekou Franklin, author and professor at MTSU; Chicoya Smith Gallman, an attorney with the NAACP Tennessee Chapter’s Political Action Committee; and Tequila Johnson, founder and director of The Equity Alliance. The group will discuss gerrymandering, racism and voting rights in Tennessee. Register to attend.

The TBA’s next book club discussion event will take place on Jan. 24, 2024, with Preston Lauterbach, author of “Beale Street Dynasty: Sex, Song and the Struggle for the Soul of Memphis.” The event will take place virtually on Zoom. Register to attend. The book, selected by TBA President Jim Barry, centers on an ex-slave who becomes the south’s first Black millionaire in Prohibition-era Memphis. Lauterbach brings history and the realities of race relations to life in his works, which also include “The Chitlin’ Circuit” and “Bluff City.” He also has co-authored three memoirs on significant figures in Black music: American blues musician and song writer Robert Johnson; Memphis soul drummer Howard Grimes; and a soon-to-be released biography of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

The American Bar Association (ABA) Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) will hold a free webinar tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. CST on the topic of “Conservatorships and Guardianships in Medicine and Law.” Organizers say the purpose of the event is to promote literacy among lawyers on issues that intersect with medicine and law. Topics include working with clients with diminished capacity, discharging patients without capacity, and emergency or expedited processes to obtain consent to discharge. Presenters include Amy Willoughby Bryant, a TBA Board of Governors member and co-founder of the Conservatorship Association of Tennessee. There is still time to register for the TBA's Law & Culture in Ireland CLE program but spots are filling up! The trip will take place May 7-13, 2024. Two travel options are available: a four-night trip to Dublin and a six-night trip to Dublin and Belfast. In conjunction with CLE Abroad, travelers will engage with local experts, academics, officials and change makers who will offer in-depth commentary on the EU and UK legal-political systems, economics, environmental justice, history and religion. In Dublin, the group also will explore ancient castles, visit landmarks, museums and notable legal institutions, and sample local cuisine. In Belfast, travelers will learn about the region's unique political history, Good Friday Agreement, ongoing reconciliation efforts and peace process. Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will host two clinics this week. Tomorrow, the group will hold a clinic specifically for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37203. On Thursday, the group will hold a clinic from 3-4:30 p.m. at Greenhouse Ministries, 309 South Academy St., Murfreesboro 37130. All times central. Registration is now open for the next free advice clinic for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits. The clinic, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts and Bradley, provides assistance with business formation and corporate governance, review of contracts and guidance in navigating local ordinances and state regulations. The next clinic will take place Jan. 18, 2024. Attorneys should email vlpa@abcnashville.org to volunteer.

A legal clinic for veterans, sponsored by Memphis Area Legal Services Inc. and the Memphis Bar Association, will be held in Memphis on Dec. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. CST. The clinic will be at the Veterans Affairs’ (VA) social work offices at 575 Phelan Ave., Memphis 38126, but telephonic options are still available. Volunteers do not have to be certified by the VA to help. Cases include wills and estates, family law, child support, criminal defense, expungement, housing and consumer protection. Those interested in assisting should contact Jake Dickerson.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold its monthly clinic at the Benjamin Hooks Library this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon CST. The library is located at 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111. Lawyers and non-lawyers are needed for this high-volume clinic. Questions commonly raised by clients include issues involving housing, family, consumer and employment law.
