The 2024 ABA Midyear Meeting will take place Jan. 31 through Feb. 5 in Louisville. Lawyers from across the country will gather for networking and learning opportunities, award presentations and governance meetings. Sessions at the conference will address qualified immunity, gun control, post-pandemic challenges for eviction cases, science in the courtroom, navigating racial equality after the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in Students for Fair Admissions, and elevating the voice of Native American women attorneys. Learn more about the meeting on the ABA's website.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) and Tennessee Judicial Conference have rescheduled their planned Bar and Bench reception due to winter weather. The event will now take place on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. CST in Memphis. The reception is sponsored by and will take place at Morgan and Morgan, 80 Monroe Ave., Ste. 900, Memphis 38103. The reception will kick off a series of networking events across Tennessee, offering a unique opportunity for lawyers and members of the judiciary to interact in a casual atmosphere.

The Tennessee Department of Revenue will host a free live webinar on Jan. 30 at 9 a.m. CST to discuss business tax basics. Topics include tax law, determining classifications, gross sales, retailer/wholesaler status, exemptions/exclusions, and deductions and credits, as well as tax filing. Learn more or register here. Registration will close Monday for the next free advice clinic for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits. The clinic, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts and Bradley, provides assistance with business formation and corporate governance, review of contracts and guidance in navigating local ordinances and state regulations. The clinic will take place next Thursday. Attorneys should email vlpa@abcnashville.org to volunteer.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold a Thursday afternoon Courthouse Advice & Counsel Clinic starting at 1 p.m. CST at the Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams St., Room 134. Volunteer lawyers are needed to help clients navigating the court system. This clinic is held the first and third Thursdays of the month. The Memphis Bar Association will hold its Second Saturday Legal Clinic this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon CST at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111.  Volunteers should arrive by 9:30 a.m. for instructions.

Memphis events scheduled to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy include Volunteer Memphis' 2024 MLK Days of Service, which will take place between Jan. 11-15 and include a youth and education day and a community clean up. King Day at the National Civil Rights Museum will be celebrated on Jan. 15 with free admission to the site. The museum also will accept donations of money and food for the Mid-South Food Bank and Vitalant will host a blood drive. Also on Monday, the Memphis Grizzlies, National Civil Rights Museum, City of Memphis and Shelby County will host the 22nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Game as the culmination of other events, which include a community service day and a panel on the intersection of race and sport.
