The Hon. Bernice B. Donald is one of five “legends” who will be honored by the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis at its 2012 Annual Tribute Luncheon and Symposium. Donald is the first African American woman to sit on the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. She was the first African American woman in the United States to serve as a bankruptcy judge and was the first African American woman to serve as judge in Tennessee. The Legends Award Reception is April 17 at 6 p.m. at the Columns in Memphis. The Annual Tribute Luncheon is April 26 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. Other honorees are civil rights activist Velma Lois Jones, Sylvia Goldsmith Marks, Dorothy Gunther Pugh and Dr. Shirley C. Raines, the first woman president of the University of Memphis. A reception honoring former Cheatham County General Sessions Judge Bill Baker will be held April 21 from 3-5 p.m. at the Senior Center in Ashland City. Baker was elected Cheatham County General Sessions judge in 1966. He went on to serve as Ashland City's municipal judge from 1981 to 1988 and was the city attorney from 1988 to 1996. From 1995 to 2004, he was Tennessee's claims commissioner for the middle division. Read more in The Tennessean

The Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program will host its 7th annual CAMP TLAP March 30 to April 1 at Montgomery Bell State Park. Educational programming includes sessions on mitigating compassion fatigue, how to handle a BPR complaint and the role narcissism plays in addiction. Hear legal scholars discuss the intersection of religious freedom, freedom of conscience, freedom of association and freedom of speech on a range of contemporary issues at a Vanderbilt University forum this Thursday at 7 p.m. in Flynn Auditorium. Moderated by Carol M. Swain, professor of law and political science, the event will include presentations by James F. Blumstein of Vanderbilt, Robert P. The University of Tennessee College of Law Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution and the Tennessee Journal of Law and Policy are sponsoring this year’s Summers-Wyatt Symposium on Friday in Knoxville. This year’s program, “Crisis, Coverage and Communication: Advocacy in a 24/7 News World,” will feature national figures including Tom Griscom, an assistant to former President Ronald Reagan who co-directed summits between Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev and directed Reagan’s "tear down this wall" speech; James Duff, who served as chief of staff to U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist during the 1999 Clinton impeachment trial; Adam Goldberg, the lawyer who served as special associate counsel to President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal; Pamela Mackey, who represented NBA player Kobe Bryant; and Joe Cheshire, who represented members of the Duke Lacrosse team. A leader in the alternative dispute resolution profession and long-time civil rights activist in Memphis, Jocelyn Wurzburg will be honored by the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators on Friday for her lasting contributions to the field of mediation. She was the first professional mediator in Memphis and has been active in the civil rights movement for more than 40 years. After Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, she led a women’s march on City Hall demanding that the city and the sanitation workers avert a second strike.
