The University of Tennessee College of Law's Center for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution and the Tennessee Association for Justice will present the Knoxville premier of "Hot Coffee" – a documentary about the well-known lawsuit brought against McDonald's in the 1990s – on Monday, April 9. The screening will take place in Room 132 of the law school at 4:30 p.m. A discussion with the film's producer Susan Saldoff will follow the screening, and a reception will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Copper Cellar. The Upper Cumberland Young Lawyers Association will sponsor the first "Jog and Jam for Justice" to benefit the Legal Aid Society in Cookeville. The 5K run/walk will start at 7:30 a.m., this Saturday (April 7), at Tucker Stadium on the Tennessee Tech campus. The race will be followed that evening with a concert with local bands from 6 to 10 p.m. at CHAR restaurant. Registration is $25 in advance or $30 at the door and includes a race t-shirt and two drink tickets for the evening event. On Saturday, March 31, the Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) will hold its spring Community Law School from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fellowship Church, 8000 Middlebrook Pike. The morning program (9 to 11 a.m.) will focus on wills and estate planning and will be presented by Tom Ramsey with Ramsey, Elmore, Stone & Caffey. The second part of the program (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) will feature Mark Brown with Menefee & Brown discussing a range of issues, including identity theft, dealing with creditors, adjustable rate mortgages and structuring a payment plan with the IRS. The KBA has been holding these programs for 17 years and estimates more than 5,000 individuals have benefited from the training. Jason Baldwin, one of the so-called "West Memphis Three" has been a free man for about seven months. And to underscore how dramatically his life has changed since then, Baldwin says he plans to finish college and go to law school. He will get a jump-start on that plan Friday when he will be on campus at the University of Memphis School of Law to talk on the topic "Satanic Panic and the Defending of the West Memphis Three." Baldwin will appear with District Court Judge Dan Stidham of Greene County, Ark., (who was a defense attorney for one of the other boys in the case) for a presentation beginning at 3:50 p.m. in the school’s Wade Auditorium. The University of Tennessee College of Law will preview a pilot program on Tuesday that will focus on states’ attorneys general, combining classroom instruction with a summer externship experience. Bob Cooper and Jim Hood, attorneys general in Tennessee and Mississippi, respectively, will speak at the event, which is at noon in room 237 at the College of Law. The pilot course will cover a range of topics that fall under the scope of authority for attorneys general found under most state statutes. Students will learn the role of the attorney general and how a state’s attorney general represents the state itself and the interests of its citizen. Learn more

The Student Bar Association at the University of Memphis School of Law is again sponsoring its annual Race Judicata – a 5K run/walk, to benefit Memphis Area Legal Services. Belmont University College of Law on Monday will present the 2012 Academy Award-nominated HBO documentary "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" and a lecture with Jason Baldwin, one of the young men who came to be known as the West Memphis 3. The movie, the third in a series, details the story of the West Memphis 3 and the trio's ultimate release from prison. Baldwin will speak at 10 a.m. in the Massey Boardroom. The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Bunch Library Multimedia Room.
