The Oath of Office ceremony for Nathan B. Pride, newly elected judge for the 26th Judicial District, Division III, of the Circuit Court will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. The event, which is open to the public, will be at the J. Alex Leech Criminal Justice Complex in Jackson.

Potential law school applicants are invited to attend an admission workshop and recruitment fair on Sept. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Tennessee College of Law. The workshop is free and no preregistration is necessary. Scheduled activities include seminars on preparing for law school, understanding the admission process, tips for taking the LSAT and options for financing a legal education. Sessions include several panel presentations as well as a Q & A time with admissions officers from a variety of law schools in the southeast and a recruitment fair featuring representatives from 21 law schools. A formal ceremony recognizing new federal judge John Fowlkes will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Memphis City Hall. Fowlkes was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed in July to replace U.S. District Judge Bernice Bouie Donald, who was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Fowlkes, a former criminal court judge, county chief administrative officer and federal prosecutor, was sworn in on Aug. 2. He began hearing cases on Aug. 6. The Commercial Appeal reported the news.

Tennessee Chief Justice Gary Wade on Thursday will swear in Hamblen County officials. The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. in the chancery court room at the Hamblen County Courthouse and will be open to the public. General Sessions Judge Doug Collins will be sworn-in, as well as board of education members, commissioners and other officials. The Citizen Tribune reports

The investiture ceremony for Judge Gary Starnes to the Hamilton County General Sessions Court, Division V,  will be Sept. 4. The event, which is open to the public and will include the swearing-in of other elected officials, is at 9 a.m. at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center, according to the Chattanooga Bar Association.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee has partnered with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and the law firm Miller & Martin to offer a free legal advice clinic on Sept.13, at 2 p.m., at the downtown office of BlueCross Blueshield, 1 Cameron Hill Circle, Chattanooga 37402. University of Tennessee College of Law’s Moot Court Board will host the state Supreme Court on Sept. 4 for a series of special events. Chief Justice Gary Wade will open the program at noon, followed by a court session at 2 p.m., during which it will hear several cases, including a wills and estate case originating from the Knox County Chancery Court and an aggravated kidnapping case. The University of Memphis will host political couple James Carville and Mary Matalin at its Political Perspectives Centennial Luncheon Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m. in the ballroom of the University Center. The couple will discuss political issues facing the nation today, as well as the ongoing presidential election campaign. Otis Sanford, former managing editor of The Commercial Appeal and chair of the university’s Excellence in Economics/Managerial Journalism program will moderate the discussion. The 2012 Equal Justice University will feature a host of stellar speakers and more than 40 educational sessions Sept. 26-29 at Paris Landing State Park. Judge Bernice Donald, recently appointed to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, will give the keynote speech at the welcome lunch on Sept. 26. That evening, former Nashville mayor Bill Purcell will speak at the annual Awards Dinner, and on Thursday, the Leadership Luncheon will feature Memphis lawyer Buck Lewis, chair of the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and former TBA president. In all, attendees can earn 15 hours of CLE.
