Belmont University is kicking off its new College of Law Speaker Series with a discussion on “First Amendment Challenges Posed by New Media Technology.” The presentation will be led by award-winning journalist and First Amendment advocate John Seigenthaler. The event will take place at Belmont’s Massey Concert Hall on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public, although tickets are required due to limited seating. View the invitation here

The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will host its annual law admission workshop and law school recruitment fair on Oct. 23. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with a workshop providing information about the law school application and admissions process. On Oct.11, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Bradley County will host its third annual Moonlight Walk in memory of Melisha Gipson, a four-year-old Cleveland girl who died tragically in 1976 from child abuse. The case gained national exposure and resulted in increased child abuse laws in Tennessee and across the country, the Chattanoogan reports.

The Knoxville Bar Association and its young lawyer group, the Barristers, team up to co-host the association’s annual four-person golf scramble on Oct. 12 at Avalon Landmark Golf Club. The entry fee of $100 per player includes green fees, cart, range balls, box lunch, a commemorative tournament gift, two tickets for beverages during the tournament, great prizes and BBQ following the tournament. American Bar Association President Laurel Bellows will keynote the Nashville 2012 Economic Summit on Women on Oct. 22 and appear at a reception the night before. A select group of Tennessee attorneys will soon experience the honor of being admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court during the 29th Annual TBA Academy Nov. 26-27 in Washington, D.C. This year's program includes a welcome reception with TBA President Jackie Dixon, group lunch and dinner, breakfast and tour of the court and private admission ceremony. Students from 12 high schools located in the 10th Judicial District will get to hear three state Supreme Court cases as participants in the Supreme Court Advancing Legal Education for Students (SCALES) program on Oct. 5. Funded by the Frist Foundation’s Ansley Fund, the program will bring more than 1,000 students and teachers to Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens.
