The Legal Aid Society will launch its 2013 Campaign for Equal Justice at a March 5 luncheon at the Nashville City Club. The annual campaign raises money for the society, as well as the Nashville Pro Bono Program. The event, which will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., will feature a keynote address by Tennessee Attorney General Robert E. Cooper Jr. and an introduction of campaign leadership. The Chattanooga Bar Association will hold its annual memorial service on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. The service will be held in the Commission Room on the fourth floor of the Hamilton County Courthouse. This year’s event honors 13 lawyers who died in the past year.

Tennessee Commissioner of Education Kevin Huffman and social justice advocate Oona Chatterjee with the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University will discuss education reform at an event Wednesday at Vanderbilt University Law School. Huffman and Chatterjee both graduated from New York University School of Law in 1998 and have spent their careers working on school reform, though from different vantage points. The event, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the Flynn Auditorium, will be moderated by Vanderbilt Law Professor Terry Maroney, who also attended law school with the speakers. On Tuesday, Chatterjee will speak at 5 p.m. on how lawyers can make a difference early in their careers. Both events are presented by the law school’s Social Justice Program and are free and open to the public.

The Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission is hosting a seminar Friday for those interested in starting a legal clinic in their area. The presentation will cover issues such as recruiting attorney volunteers, publicizing a clinic, dealing with conflict checks and malpractice insurance. The TBA Young Lawyers Division has two events taking place on Saturday that still need attorney volunteers. First, in Franklin, the Williamson County Mock Trial Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs throughout the day. Attorneys are needed to serve as scorers while law students or legal staff are needed to serve as bailiffs. The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will host a Pre-Law Day for diverse undergraduate students Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will hear tips on how to prepare for law school, submit a competitive application and apply for financial aid and scholarships. A keynote address by actor, author and Harvard Law School graduate Hill Harper will close out the day. Harper, who is best known for his acting role on the television series CSI and for his authorship of four New York Times bestsellers, is founder of Manifest Your Destiny Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering, encouraging and inspiring youth to succeed through mentorship, scholarship and grant programs.

The Napier-Looby Bar Foundation (NLBF) will hold its 9th Annual Barristers' Banquet and Awards Program Feb. 28 at the Sheraton in downtown Nashville. On Feb. 13, the Legal Aid Society, Nashville Pro Bono Program and Metropolitan Nashville Public Defender’s Office will organize more than 40 legal professionals and volunteers to provide free legal help to those who attend Project Homeless Connect – a one-day event that brings together more than 70 agencies to serve approximately 1,500 individuals and families struggling with homelessness, housing issues and unemployment. It is the first time the pro bono groups have joined the public defender in providing services to this group.
