A workshop on combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery in the mid-south will be held May 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rhodes College in Memphis. The training session is designed for service providers, medical professionals, religious leaders, translators, law enforcement, immigrant advocates or anyone concerned about the growing problem of human trafficking, slavery and exploitation. The TBA Young Lawyers Division will host a membership event on May 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available. Young lawyers in the area are encouraged to drop by and to bring a stuffed animal for district’s public service project. “Bears from the Bench” will provide stuffed animals for local juvenile court judges to hand out to abused and neglected children who appear in their courtrooms. More than 30 law schools in Tennessee and surrounding states have signed up to participate in the 3rd Annual TBA Diversity Job Fair set for Aug. 23-24 at the Tennessee Bar Center in Nashville. This event provides legal employers in Tennessee the opportunity to interview diverse 2L and 3L law students for summer associate positions, clerkships and associate attorney positions. Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee will receive the Lizzie Crozier French Women's Leadership Award on June 14 at the East Tennessee Women's Leadership Summit in Knoxville. Lee is being recognized for supporting and empowering women advancing in society, the Knoxville Daily Sun reports. The award is named for French, who fought for women’s suffrage and was the first woman to address the Tennessee General Assembly and run for the Knoxville City Council. Lee is a past president of the East Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women, board member of the Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women and the first woman to serve on the Eastern Section of the Tennessee Court of Appeals. The Sumner County Teen Court program will host its annual scholarship benefit dinner and silent auction on Thursday.  The event will take place at Hendersonville Christian Academy, 355 Old Shackle Island Rd., Nashville 37075. The annual event honors the legacy of Mary Ann Williams, who spent 20 years with the Department of Children Services and was instrumental in creating the state’s first teen court in Sumner County, the Tennessean reports.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) will host its Annual Pro Bono Night on June 27 in Chattanooga. Judge Marie Williams will serve as master of ceremonies at the event, which honors local attorneys who provided pro bono legal assistance over the past year. Awards will be presented to outstanding volunteers and supporters of access to justice work, including U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann and Max Bahner of Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel. The law firm of Miller & Martin and the Hamilton County Herald also will be honored at the event, which will be held at the Bessie Smith Hall, 200 East M.L. A free training seminar for criminal justice practitioners, victim advocates, mental health therapists and other allied professionals on “Civil Justice for Victims of Crime in Tennessee” will be held in Memphis on Tuesday. The seminar will explore how victims of crimes such as sexual assault, domestic, child, or elder abuse, and identity theft can use civil lawsuits to obtain justice, hold responsible parties accountable, prevent future crimes, and obtain the financial resources victims need to rebuild their lives.

An investiture ceremony for new Hamilton County Juvenile Court Judge Rob Philyaw will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Juvenile Court, 1600 E. 3rd St., Chattanooga. Philyaw replaces Judge Suzanne Bailey, whose retirement is effective at the end of April.

CASA of Northeast Tennessee will hold its 5th Annual Benefit Motorcycle Ride on May 11 at Smith Brothers Harley Davidson in Johnson City. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The ride starts at 11 a.m. A $10 donation is requested per rider. Food and drinks will be provided after the ride.
