In June 2011, Casey Anthony was accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony, whose remains were found close to the Anthony home. The case was highly sensationalized and covered in the news media for months. Jeff Ashton, the prosecutor in this trial, sought the death penalty. Anthony was found not guilty. Ashton will be speaking about his experiences in this case as well as his book “Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony” on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the UTK University Center Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

The Kingsport Bar Association, Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the TBA Young Lawyers Division will host free legal advice clinics to assist low-income individuals every third Thursday of the month. The first clinic will be held tomorrow in downtown Kingsport, 243 East Charlemont Ave., at 4:30 p.m. Read the press release for more information.

In collaboration with legal and community volunteers, the Legal Aid Society will host a free citizenship assistance workshop Saturday in Nashville. The workshops provide an opportunity for local immigrant families to receive free assistance in applying for naturalization, opening the doors for increased civic participation and integration. Appointments are available from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Nashville Bar Association's free Annual Member Picnic will take place Thursday at the Hall of Fame Park, located between the Country Music Hall of Fame, Hilton Hotel and Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner from the Copper Kettle to be served at 7 p.m. This year’s picnic, cosponsored by the Metro Law Department, will feature a sports theme with trivia and activities provided by event sponsors. Attendees are encouraged to show support for their favorite sports team by wearing a jersey or team hat.

The Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society has rescheduled the unveiling of Phase II of the Tennessee Judiciary Museum. The event now will take place on the evening of Dec. 4. It will feature a short program honoring Supreme Court Justice Janice Holder for her service on the court, as well as cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The event was moved back one day so as to not conflict with the Nashville Bar Association’s Annual Meeting set for the evening of Dec. 5. Lipscomb University’s HumanDocs film series is kicking off it’s new season Wednesday with “I Learn America,” a documentary that follows five students at a high school that serves newly arrived immigrants from more than 50 nations. Co-sponsored by the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, the Nashville Film Festival and Nashville Public Television, the free screening will be at 7 p.m. with a panel discussion to follow at Shamblin Theater on Lipscomb’s campus.

The Chattanooga Bar Association will celebrate Constitution Week with three main events next week, the Hamilton County Herald reports. Monday at 6 p.m. at the Hamilton County Courthouse, Judge Neil Thomas III and historian Linda Moss Mines will lead a seminar on “Contempt of Court: The Ed Johnson Case.” Tuesday at noon, Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger and others will “ring the bells” of the courthouse celebrating our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. Lastly, Thursday at 4 p.m. students from local schools will gather at the Chattanooga City Hall to read the Preamble to the U. S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Belmont College of Law Legal Aid Society will host a free legal clinic Sept. 26 at 6:00 p.m. for residents of Sophia’s Heart, a transitional shelter for families in crisis that helps them get back on their feet, secure housing and resolve personal, financial, and employment impediments. The clinic will offer free legal advice to assist families in resolving various civil and criminal issues. It will be held at 1034 Eastland Ave. in Nashville. The Knoxville Bar Association has announced that the 2013 Red Mass will be held Oct. 18 at 7 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 414 West Vine Ave., Knoxville 37902. This ancient tradition celebrates those who seek justice, particularly judges, attorneys, law school professors and government officials. Participants use the occasion to pray for the virtues needed for the right and just administration of their respective offices. Those attending in robes are asked to gather in the parish hall at 6:45 a.m. to process as a group into the church. A light breakfast will be served in the parish hall following the service. Community members of all faiths are invited to attend.
