Peter Letsou, the new dean of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, will be the featured speaker for the Memphis Bar Foundation’s luncheon on Oct. 8. The event, being held at the Peabody Hotel, will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Letsou will discuss his vision for the law school and how his plans will impact the Memphis legal community. In addition, new foundation fellows will be recognized, grants will be awarded to local non-profit agencies and the Irvin Bogatin Awards will be presented to University of Memphis law students. Attorney Keith Boykins will speak at Tennessee State University as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series on Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. in Kean Hall. Boykins is a CNBC contributor, MSNBC commentator and New York Times bestselling author. He was the highest-ranking openly gay person in the Clinton White House and participated in the nation’s first meeting between a sitting president and leaders of the LGBT community. The Memphis/Mid-South Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and Counsel on Call will hold a Happy Hour to kick off the start of the U.S. Supreme Court Calendar on Oct. 7. The Tennessee Department of Correction and the nonprofit victim advocacy organization You Have the Power will host the “Walk Off Crime for No More Victims,”a 5K walk this Saturday to celebrate 20 years of serving the community. Founded in 1993 by former Tennessee First Lady Andrea Conte, the organization's mission is to advocate, educate and empower victims and communities impacted by violent crime. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, a 1968 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, will speak at the school Oct. 4 at noon in the Baker Donelson Classroom (Room 132). Presented as part of the Joel A. Katz-Sun Trust Lecture Series, Chambliss will reflect on his 18 years on Capitol Hill, which included eight years in the U.S. House of Representatives and 10 years in the U.S. Senate where he has focused on homeland security, intelligence and agriculture issues. The St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers' Guild will host the 23rd Annual Red Mass this Friday at noon at St. Peter Catholic Church, 190 Adams Ave. 38103. The Liturgy will be celebrated by J. Terry Steib, bishop of Memphis. The mass is held to invoke divine guidance and blessings on those involved in the legal profession. Each of the area’s Catholic high schools also were invited to send students to the mass and a presentation on financial literacy and the rule of law by Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.

The University of Tennessee College of Law has coordinated the HELP clinic at Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries for several years. Now, a coalition of groups – including the ABA Section of Litigation, the law firm Baker Donelson and Legal Aid of East Tennessee – will join the college in holding the clinic twice a month. Prospective volunteers are invited to a reception and training session next Monday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Each participant will receive a volunteer manual to better address questions that may surface while serving at the clinic. The Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence will host "Pearls & Pinstripes," a gala evening with silent auction on Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Northeast Tennessee is looking for additional volunteers to represent children in the judicial system as well as community leaders to serve on its board of directors.
