Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will visit the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law to speak with law school students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Memphis community on Dec. 16. Justice Scalia will speak at a luncheon at the Peabody Hotel from noon to 1 p.m., with a private program for Memphis Law students at the law school immediately following. The luncheon is open to the public; individuals or organizations interested in purchasing a table or tickets should contact Paula Bethge at (901) 678-4922.

Williamson County Juvenile Court Judge Sharon Guffee knows all too well how drug and alcohol use can impact young people; she sees it in her court every day. To equip parents to address abuse issues with their teens, Guffee is hosting a seminar on Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Summit High School in Spring Hill, The Tennessean reports. The program is a partnership between the Juvenile Court, 21st Judicial Drug Task Force, Dr. James Wellborn and a local church. Parents can expect to hear about current trends in drug use, an overview of court related services and responses, and expert advice about parenting teens. Students who attend will gain information about the physical and legal dangers of drug and alcohol abuse as well as tips for talking to their parents.

The Institute for Law, Justice and Society at Lipscomb University is planning its second free community legal clinic Nov. 4 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Room 324 of the Burton Health Sciences Building. Young lawyers with the Tennessee Bar Association and the Chattanooga Bar Association will hold two training sessions Friday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Chattanooga Downtown Library Auditorium. The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will host an admissions workshop and recruitment fair Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The university’s pre-law adviser and the law school’s dean of admissions will speak and then representatives from six area law schools will be available to talk to interested students. In addition to Memphis, schools represented include the University of Tennessee, University of Mississippi, Mississippi College, Baylor University and Belmont University School of Law. CASA of Northeast Tennessee will host its Eighth Annual Red Shoe Masquerade and Silent Auction Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. Dress is cocktail attire. The East Tennessee Lawyer’s Association for Women (ETLAW) invites members of the bar to its 30th Anniversary Celebration and Dinner Oct. 25 in Knoxville. Authors Stephen and Gaile Owens will discuss their new book “Set Free: Discover Forgiveness Amidst Murder and Betrayal” on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Lipscomb University's Swang Business Center, hosted by the Lipscomb Serving and Learning Together Program, the Institute for Law, Justice and Society and the LIFE program. “Set Free” describes Stephen’s journey to forgive his mother after her incarceration for attempting to have his father killed.

Six events will take place across the state this week as part of Celebrate Pro Bono Month. Among them is an Operation Stand Down Clinic in Nashville for veterans with civil and criminal legal issues, and a Pro Bono Attorneys Hall of Fame Reception in Chattanooga. The veterans clinic will be held on Wednesday at the Operation Stand Down offices. The reception will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. at Legal Aid of East Tennessee. Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Gary Wade will speak at the event. Get details for these and other events.
