Legal Aid of East Tennessee will host a holiday Open House Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 502 South Gay St., Suite 404 in downtown Knoxville. Local lawyers are invited to enjoy the Krutch Park tree lighting at 6 p.m. and then stop by Legal Aid’s office to warm up and enjoy holiday goodies. Admission is free with a business card. The Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society reports that a limited number of tickets are still available for its event on Dec. 4 in Nashville. The evening kicks off with a cocktail reception at the Hermitage Hotel followed by a short program and a tour of the Tennessee Judiciary Museum’s new Phase II. Continuous shuttle service will be provided throughout the evening so guests can tour the museum at their leisure. Attorney Judy Smith, former press aide to President George H. W. Bush and the inspiration behind the hit ABC television show “Scandal,” will visit Chattanooga on Feb. 4 to deliver the keynote at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center’s Anniversary Luncheon. The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) will hold its Annual Meeting Dec. 13 at 8:30 a.m. at the City County Building. The KBA’s Nominating Committee has recommended the following members for election: Tasha C. Blakney for president-elect, Wayne R. Kramer for treasurer and Amanda M. Busby for secretary. Association members also will fill four open positions on the board. Those nominated to date include Charles E. Atchley Jr., Joshua M. Ball, Wynne du Mariau Caffey, Robert R. Carl II, S. Dawn Coppock, Timothy M. McLemore and Keith D. Stewart. The KBA reports that all judges have been asked to delay court until 10 a.m. that day.

The Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law will offer three free LSAT workshops this month, Knoxnews reports. The sessions will run from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, 20 and 23. Each session will cover two components of the exam. The training will be held in Room 101 of the law school, located at 601 W. Summit Hill Dr. All materials will be provided. Bert Brandenburg, executive director of Justice at Stake, and Texas Supreme Court Justice Wallace Jefferson will appear on MSNBC tomorrow between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Central for a discussion about a new study showing the impact of special interest spending in judicial races. The study -- a collaboration between Justice at Stake, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, and the National Institute on Money in State Politics -- looks at the first full election cycle since the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, and how special interest groups took advantage of the ability to spend freely in state judicial races.

The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) will hold its annual LawTalk Program next week. This year, the free educational program will focus on issues of concern to the elderly, including having a will and an estate plan, and understanding legal protections that are available for seniors and their caregivers. Sessions will be held Nov. 15 at the O'Connor Senior Center and Nov. 16 at Fellowship Church. Free parking is available at both locations and materials will be provided. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2014 Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Awards, which recognize the law firm and corporate legal departments that best exemplify extraordinary commitment to access to justice ideals and pro bono service. The awards will be presented at the Eighth Annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Gala set for March 1 at Nashville's Hermitage Hotel. The initiative is a joint effort of the TBA Access to Justice Committee, the TBA Corporate Counsel Section and the Association of Corporate Counsel to help foster a coordinated approach to pro bono work and support for the access to justice community by corporate counsel in Tennessee. This partnership has raised over $350,000 in sponsorships by Tennessee corporate legal departments, law firms and other organizations and individuals. Gov. Bill Haslam will recognize four veteran state employees and honor more than 525,000 veterans living in Tennessee. Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder and Tennessee Military Department Major General Terry “Max” Haston will join Haslam during a ceremony at the Tennessee Tower Plaza in Nashville tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the event will be relocated to the Old Supreme Court Chambers on the first floor of the Capitol, the Leaf Chronicle reports.
