Registration is now open for the next free advice clinic for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits, set for Oct. 17 in Nashville. The clinic, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts and Bradley, provides assistance with business formation and corporate governance, review of contracts and guidance in navigating local ordinances and state regulations. The Memphis Bar Association (MBA) is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and will mark the occasion with a special event on Oct. 19 at the Museum of Science & History (MoSH). The evening will run from 6:30 to 11 p.m. CDT and feature food, drinks and music by the Soul Shockers. Each attendee also will leave with a special anniversary gift. The Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians will honor retired Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon G. Lee at a luncheon on Oct. 3. According to Knox TN Today, Lee, a former Girl Scout herself, is being recognized for her achievements in law and her role as a role model. “Justice Lee is a great example of a Girl Scout who grew into a distinguished leader in her field and paved the way for future generations, which is the very essence of what Girl Scouting represents,” said CEO Lynne Fugate. Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors (TNJFON) seeks to raise $50,000 at its annual Oye Vecino LIVE fundraiser on Sept. 19. The event, which features a panel discussion, music and food, aims to support the organization's mission of providing free or low-cost immigration legal services. This year's goal is higher due to increased operational costs and the absence of previous fundraising events. The organization already has raised over $32,000 toward its goal. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump will premiere his documentary "How to Sue the Klan" at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Sept. 17. According to Chattanoogan.com, the film chronicles a landmark legal victory by five Black women who sued the Ku Klux Klan in 1982 for violence and intimidation. A panel discussion featuring Crump and the film's director will follow the screening. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

Maryville College will welcome three jurists, retired Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon G. Lee, Belmont University College of Law Associate Professor David L. Hudson Jr. and Tennessee Court of Appeals Judge W. Neal McBrayer on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. EDT in the Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center for the Arts as part of its Constitution Day celebration. The panel, which is open to the public, will delve into four recent Supreme Court cases and their impact on the First Amendment, according to Knox TN Today.
