Rhodes College in Memphis again will host the opening rounds of the American Mock Trial Association’s National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament March 21-23. Tennessee Bar Association President Cindy Wyrick will address graduates of the University of Tennessee College of Law at its fall hooding ceremony tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the UT Law Rotunda. Wyrick, a 1994 graduate of the law school, is a member of Ogle, Gass & Richardson PC and practices in the areas of wrongful death, personal injury, medical malpractice, family law, business formation and litigation, wills and estates, and general civil litigation.

The Shelby County Trustee’s office is partnering with Memphis Area Legal Services and the Shelby County Probate Court Clerk to host a workshop series for seniors titled “Home Sweet Home.” The sessions will focus on the tax benefits available to seniors, veterans and the disabled; paying property taxes and the importance of properly transferring real estate to heirs. Following today's program at Orange Mound Senior Center, there will be a session Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at Frayser/Raleigh Senior Center, and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at the JK Lewis Senior Center.

University of Tennessee College of Law instructor Elizabeth Gentry will debut her first novel, “Housebound,” at a book launch party Friday at 6 p.m. at John Black Photography, 501 Union Ave. in downtown Knoxville, the Informant reports. Gentry works as a writing specialist at the college and also teaches for the university’s undergraduate English Department. She holds a master of fine arts in fiction writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The book is published by Lake Forest College Press with distribution by Northwestern University Press. It is available on Amazon.com and at independent bookstores.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will visit the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law to speak with law school students, faculty, staff, alumni and the local community next Monday. Scalia will speak at a luncheon at the Peabody Hotel from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a private program for law students. The Peabody luncheon is open to the public. The Knoxville Bar Association will hold its Annual Membership Meeting Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. Wade V. Davies is set to assume the presidency of the association. Other officers poised to be elected are President-elect Tasha C. Blakney, Treasurer Wayne R. Kramer and Secretary Amanda M. Busby. Members also will select three members for the Board of Governors and one member to serve as the Government/Public Sector representative on the board. Those nominated to date are Joshua M. Ball, Wynne du Mariau Caffey, Robert R. Carl II, S. Dawn Coppock, Timothy M. McLemore and Keith D. Stewart. Charles E. Atchley Jr. is the only candidate thus far for the government position but nominations for all of these seats may be made during the meeting.

The Tennessee Justice Center will offer two free CLEs designed to train lawyers on how to help others understand the provisions of the Affordable Care Act and enroll in the federal health care exchange. The first session will take place Dec. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the offices of Community Health Systems, 4000 Meridian Blvd., Franklin 37067. The second course will be offered Dec. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the offices of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, 165 Madison Ave., Memphis 38103. After the training sessions, which were funded through the TBA’s Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative, a free legal clinic will be held for the local community. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Ninth Judicial District is offering two opportunities for the public to have a photo of a child or pet with Santa Claus in Harriman while learning how to help abused children, Roane County News reports. The agency reports that Santa will be in front of the former Roane Medical Center from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 before the city’s Christmas parade and again from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 14 at Earl Duff Subaru. The outreach provides an opportunity to educate local families about CASA's work in the community.
