The screening of the HBO documentary Gideon’s Army, set for tonight in Nashville, has been postponed because of icy weather conditions, according to the event host, the Nashville Public Defender's Office. In an email, Public Defender Dawn Deaner said they are in the process of rescheduling the event and will provide an update as soon as possible.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will visit the University of Tennessee College of Law April 14-15. He will present the Rose Lecture on April 15 in the Alumni Memorial Building’s Cox Auditorium. The event is open to law students, faculty, staff, alumni and other members of the campus community.

There are two weeks left for citizens to nominate an elected official and/or an appointed public official for the awards named in honor of the late Probate Court Clerk Bobby Dunavant, the Memphis Daily News reports. Citizens can nominate someone through March 14 on a form on the Rotary Club of Memphis East website. The awards will be presented April 21 at a luncheon featuring a keynote speech by Sen. Lamar Alexander.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will give the 2014 Cecil Sims Lecture at Vanderbilt Law School on March 18, the Tennessean reports. In an email to alumni, law school dean Chris Guthrie said Thomas also would spend a day meeting with students and faculty. The lecture is an invitation-only event exclusively for the Vanderbilt community, with no reporters or photographers – or even cell phones – allowed in.

The Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission will hold the first-ever statewide gathering of faith-based organizations and pro bono lawyers on April 7 in Nashville. The Faith-Based Initiatives Summit is designed to bring together individuals and groups with a common interest in assisting Tennesseans with civil legal problems. The event will take place at Lipscomb University’s Ezell Center, and will highlight the Tennessee Faith and Justice Alliance (TFJA), which was launched by the court and the commission last year. The first of many events featuring the TBA’s new Legal Handbook for Tennessee Seniors will take place Thursday in Knoxville when Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) holds a training session at the John T. O’Connor Senior Center. The event will begin at 2 p.m. TBA President Cindy Wyrick and Public Education Committee Co-Chair Angelia Nystrom will be joined by representatives from LAET and the Knoxville/Knox County Office on Aging to present the new resource and answer questions. The Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission is hosting a Pro Bono Legal Clinic Conference March 10 in Nashville. The conference will feature a variety of presentations and round-table discussions on topics such as recruiting attorney volunteers, publicizing clinics, reporting clinic result and assessing lessons learned. The event is open to any attorney who is interested in learning more about legal clinics. The conference will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nashville Public Library. Rogersville lawyer Mark A. Skelton is again hosting the Skelton Law Racing Series, which this year includes a 10-mile road race, a four-mile road race and four trail races. Proceeds from the 8K and mile run, set for May 31, benefit CASA for Kids, which serves families in Sullivan and Hawkins counties. The City of Knoxville is hosting a citywide celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. One of the planned events is a free brown bag lunch Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event, which will take place in the Small Assembly Room of the City County Building, will feature a panel discussion on the topic “Voting, Voting Statistics and Districting." Speakers include state Rep. Joe Armstrong, City of Knoxville Deputy Mayor Bill Lyons and former mayor Daniel Brown. The panel will be led by moderator Robert Booker, a former state representative and Knoxville city councilman, and current executive director of the Beck Cultural Exchange Center. The Nashville Public Defender’s Office is hosting a screening of the award-winning HBO documentary Gideon’s Army. The showing will take place next Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Carmike Bellevue 8 Cinema. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online. The film, which premiered last year at the Sundance Film Festival, follows the stories of three young public defenders whose struggle against long hours, low pay and staggering caseloads causes them to challenge the assumptions of the current criminal justice system. The Nashville Public Defender’s Office reports that, like the lawyers featured in the film, it has joined a nationwide movement to reform indigent defense. Download a flyer about the event.
