The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law Student Bar Association will host the annual “Race Judicata” this Saturday. All proceeds benefit Memphis Area Legal Service, which provides free legal service to the elderly and low-income families. The race is open to the public. Runners and walkers are welcome.

Dr. Patrick Juola, the man whose linguistic analysis proved that J.K. Rowling is the author of The Cuckoo’s Calling – a novel published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith – will speak at the University of Tennessee College of Law Wednesday at noon in Room 132. His topic will be “Forensic Stylometrics and Linguistic Evidence.” Dr. Juola is professor of Computer Science and director of the Evaluating Variations in Language (EVL) Laboratory at Duquesne University. The lecture, which is cosponsored by the university’s Linguistics Program and Department of Computer Science, is free and open to the public.

The University of Memphis Health Law Institute will host its inaugural Health Law Symposium April 3-4. The theme of the two-day event is Race, Research, and Rights: The Legacy of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The program will feature two special guests: civil rights attorney Fred Gray, who brought a class action suit on behalf of syphilis study survivors, and James Jones, author of Bad Blood, an account of the study. The event will kick off with the screening of a documentary and an informal discussion with Gray and Jones on Thursday night. On Friday, sessions will cover how the study continues to impact ethnic and racial minorities in research and treatment settings.

The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) is hosting three forums over the next several weeks for lawyers to meet those running for judicial office. This Thursday, candidates for Criminal Court, Division III, and General Sessions Court, Division II, will attend an informal "meet and greet" from noon to 1 p.m. in the Small Assembly Room of the City County Building. On April 3, the association will host a Judicial Candidates Reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the U.T. Conference Center. And, on April 17, those running for criminal court clerk will be available from noon to 1 p.m. in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. The events are part of the association’s “Get to Know Your Judicial Candidate” initiative, which also includes an online site with information about Knoxville courts and how judges are elected in the county, as well as biographical information of candidates.

April 1 is the deadline for entering the TBA Environmental Law Section's Jon E. Hastings Memorial Award writing competition for law students. Entries may be submitted by law students enrolled in a Tennessee law school in 2013 or 2014. The competition is held in memory of one of the section’s outstanding founding members and has a cash prize pool of $1,200. This writing contest is a juried competition for the best legal writing on a topic of Tennessee or federal environmental law. The competition Rules and Announcement are available online. The first public meeting for the Hamilton County Family Justice Center will be on Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. at Stuart Heights Baptist Church in Chattanooga.
