Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee is hosting its annual “Lawyers for Littles” bowling tournament to raise money for the organization. The event will take place June 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nashville’s Hillwood Strike & Spare. Lawyers, law firms, legal organizations and legal vendors are invited to form five-person teams to compete for the best score, team name, costumes or bowling shirts and most money raised. This Saturday marks 60 years since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka finding school segregation unconstitutional. The U.S. Courts website has resources to commemorate the landmark ruling including a history of the doctrine of “separate but equal,” how the NAACP mounted a two-decade-long legal campaign to challenge that idea and a profile of Justice Thurgood Marshall, who as a young lawyer led numerous lawsuits against segregation.

The Memphis Chapter of the Association of Women Attorneys will hold a forum featuring Shelby County judicial candidates running on the August ballot. The forum will take place June 26 at 5 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave. The Memphis Daily News reports on the event.

Nashville lawyer Bill Ramsey will host his annual birthday bash honoring the music and legacy of Otha Turner on June 7 from 2 to 9 p.m. The event will feature live music from Blue Mother Tupelo and Stacey Mitchhart among others. A $30 donation at the door will go to support the work of Second Harvest Food Bank. Ramsey is a member with the firm of Neal & Harwell.

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County NAACP will host the 7th Annual Criminal Justice Seminar Saturday at the Chattanooga-Choo-Choo. According to officials, the seminar will focus on balancing the scales of justice through rehabilitation, reentry and redemption especially for non-violent offenders who compose the mass majority of individuals currently incarcerated or that are on parole and probation. Gideon’s Promise, a program that trains young public defenders working in the South, will stop in Memphis later this month as part a four-city tour. On May 29, the founder of Gideon’s Promise, Jon Rapping, will host a social event at Local Gastropub from 6 to 8:30 pm. The event, “Burgers & Brews,” is free and open to the public but reservations are required. On May 30 from 2:30 to 6 p.m., the group’s award-winning documentary, "Gideon’s Army" will be shown in the Wade Auditorium at the University of Memphis School of Law. The screening will be preceded by a panel discussion including Shelby County Public Defender Stephen Bush and representatives from Gideon’s Promise. Learn more here.

Williamson County CASA will hold its 2014 Voices for Children event May 21 at the Franklin Theater. Billed as “An Evening with Music City Hit-Makers,” the event will feature some of Nashville’s hottest songwriters accompanied by the Nashville Studio Symphony. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour as well as a silent and live auction to be followed by the show. Items to be auctioned include a mandolin signed by Dolly Parton and a football signed by Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Jake Locker. All proceeds will support the work of Williamson County CASA. Tickets are $125.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) will host its Annual Pro Bono Night next Thursday at Bessie Smith Hall in Chattanooga. The event will celebrate local attorneys who have donated time and legal services during the past year to aid those who otherwise could not afford an attorney. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of four annual awards, including honoring Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee, an outspoken advocate for access to justice for all Tennesseans, with the Chief Justice William M. Barker Equal Access to Justice Award. Tickets are $25 per person. All proceeds from the event will benefit the programs of LAET. The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of The Federalist Society presents a panel discussion on religious liberties May 28 at The Madison Hotel, 79 Madison Ave. Speakers include Scott Gaylord, professor with Elon University School of Law, and Lisa Shaw Roy, professor at the University of Mississippi School of Law. The 8th annual CASA Road Race will be held May 31 at Crockett Spring Park in historic downtown Rogersville. The event will include 8K and one mile races. All proceeds from the events will benefit CASA for Kids Inc. to advocate for abused and neglected children in Hawkins County. The event is part of the 2014 Skelton Law Racing Series and is directed by Rogersville attorney Mark Skelton. For information, contact Mark Skelton at (423) 272-4812 or markskelton@markskelton.com. Skelton, a University of Tennessee College of Law alum, founded the racing series with his wife in 2002 to promote fitness and health in East Tennessee. Today, his children -- avid runners Todd and Amy -- will follow in his footsteps, with both graduating from UT Law on the same day.
